본고는 이청준의 「잔인한 도시」에 나타난 권력의 이중 구조에 대해서 고찰하고자 한다. 이 소설에는 ‘전짓불’과 ‘새장수’로 알레고리화 되어있는 두 개의 권력 양상이 중첩적으로 형상화되어 있다. ‘전짓불’은 사회의 관계망 속에 은밀하게 스며들어 작동하는 푸코의 미시권력으로 볼 수 있고, ‘새장수’는 우리가 통상적으로 지배-복종 관계로 이해하고 있는 전통적 의미의 권력으로 볼 수 있다. 미시 권력인 ‘전짓불’은 물리적인 강제와 위협을 가하지 않고서도 대상을 감금하며, 빛 속에 놓인 대상은 보이지 않는 감시의 시선 속에서 불안과 두려움을 느낀다. ‘새장수’는 대상에게 물리적인 강제와 위협을 가하는 가시적인 권력으로 새의 속날개깃을 자르는 데에서 그 위선적이고 폭력적인 실체를 드러낸다. 이렇듯 비가시적인 미시권력과 가시적인 거시권력은 각기 다른 양상을 보이며 작동하나, 이는 한 사회 속에서 상충하는 게 아니라 상호보완관계에 있다고 할 수 있다. 작가는 교묘하고도 억압적으로 작동하는 권력의 이중적인 메커니즘을 전짓불과 새장수라는 두 개의 알레고리 기호로 형상화내고 있다.
This thesis examines duality of power in Ruthless City(「잔인한 도시」) written by Lee Cheong-Jun. This novel shows two different power mechanisms which should be approached by different types of the perspectives: one is Michel Foucault's microscopic power concept, the other classical power concept. Foucalt's power theory has new and different perspective from the classical power theory in that power is not one possessed but one just performed. According to Foucault, power is performed all through the social networks, pervasive and omni-scattered, like a spider's web. This microscope power is true to 'flashlight' in Ruthless City, under which a man and a bird feel anxiety and fear. Flashlight, even without physical intimidation or coercion, imprisons and observes the man and the bird. 'A bird dealer' in the novel is typed as a classical power, whose mechanism shows a dominant-subordinate relationship, sometimes performing coactive strength, repression, or violence. The bird dealer's violent power culminates at the moment that he cuts the bird's feather in order to rule the bird. The tame bird itself plunges into the flashlight, which seems a blindly surrendering behavior out of the long sufferance by the power's despotism. These two different types of power mechanism is not conflict but complementary each other in one society. Lee, who persistently questioned about the power mechanism as his literature subject, seizes the dual types of power in the novel.
