본 연구에서는 우사단로10길에 거주하면서 자신의 작업실 및 상점을 운영하는 청년 예술창업가들이 공간을 어떻게 전유하고 전략적으로 활용하는지 살펴보았다. 이에 앞서 우사단로10길을 둘러싼 공간이 역사적으로 어떻게 형성되어왔는지, 그리고 이 공간을 미디어에서 어떻게 재현하고 있는지를 검토함으로써 현재 구조화된 공간으로서 우사단로10길의 양상을 알아보았다. 우사단로10길이 자리한 용산구 이태원동 및 보광동 일대는 사회가 요구하는 공간으로 변화하면서 현재의 일상 공간으로 형성, 유지되고 있다. 또한 미디어에서는 우사단로10길을 청년장사꾼들이 성공적으로 창업한 지역, 서울의 명물, 다양성이 공존하는 지역, 그리고 투자 대상이라는 공간으로 재현하고 있었다. 우사단로10길로 이주한 청년 예술창업가들과의 인터뷰를 통해 이들이 우사단로10길을 어떻게 전략적으로 활용하는지를 살펴본 결과, 낮은 임대료 덕에 이 지역으로 진입한 청년 예술창업가들은 여러 가지 다양한 문화적 활동 및 창의적 이벤트를 통해 공간을 전유하면서 공간의 모습을 변화시키고 있었다. 또한 공간적으로나 사회적으로 소외되어 있던 구성원들과의 유대로 새로운 도시공동체의 가능성을 높이고 있음을 알 수 있었다.
This study aims to investigate how young entrepreneurs appropriate the urban space, specifically in the Usadanro-10 gil. Before doing this, historical development and media representation of Usadanro-10 gil are examined to find that how social movements are proceeding to establish structured space. As many people in terms of nationality and race have flowed in the Usadanro-10 gil since 1950s, a business district for international food develops. However, the community lag behind comparatively as urban redevelopment projects are delayed. In respect of representation of space, media reproduced the image of Usadanro-10 gil as the region of success for young businessmen, landmark of diversity and sightseeing, and property investment target. For the purpose of investigating appropriation of space by youth entrepreneurs, individual interviews with 8 young artists who reside and at the same time have their own store in Usadanro-10 gil are conducted. As the young artists have moved in this area because of low rent, they actively perform various cultural events, including ‘stairway market’ ‘Dong-Dong tour’ ‘rooftop concert’ etc. In this process, the nature of social space has been changed. There seems to be a sign of changes within the native residents. They become a part of the event, and experience bonding one another. The Usadanro-10 gil has remained on the margins of the city and the economy, the work of young artists show the possibility of new urban space and community.
