This article questions the conclusions of current debate over Marxism in development studies that suggest development theory animated by Marxism is at an ‘impasse.’ It then draws upon Marx’s Capital to produce an ontology of socialism as a set of basic principles to guide socialist construction. The article then discuses how an alternative view of what constitutes socialism and socialist development can provide renewed hope for the building of re-distributive, eco-sensitive socialist societies across the less developed world.
