디킨슨의 시가 현대에도 여전히 대중성을 확보하고 있는 이유는 당대의 자본주의라는 시대의 동인이 지금도 지속되고 있고, 자본주의와 더불어 더욱 공고화된 상품화와 가부장적 구조가 현재에도 온존하기 때문이었다. 그녀의 시에 나타나는 이미지스트로서의 시적 형식실험도 산업화가 몰고 온 인간정신의 노예화에 대한 대응전략으로 시적 정신의 궁극적인 승리를 나타내는 것이었다. 디킨슨이 하위주체로서의 위치에서 자기 시대변화 동인의 핵심을 포착하려했으면서도, 인간의 보편적 상황에 대해서도 객관적으로 접근하려했던 점도 중요했다. 산업화의 과정을 직시하면서 나타난 사회변화과정을 직시하되 분별력 있는 미래의 독자를 위해 당대의 진실과 보편적 진리에 대한 관심을 견지하고 있었기 때문이었다. 그리고 시간의 한계를 뛰어넘는 시적 실체를 포착하고자 하였으며 시인의 임무는 객관적으로 존재하는 자연의 암호를 빌려와 인간의 노력을 더하여 장미유와 같은 영적인 시를 쓰는 것이었다. 디킨슨은 시인에 의해 이미지화되는 모든 것들이 자연의 모방이니 소유권이 모방자에게 있을 수 없다는 논리로 인간정신의 상품화를 비판했다. 출판구조나 결혼에 내재되어 있는 당대 산업화의 논리를 꿰뚫어 보면서 디킨슨은 약자로서의 자신의 위치로 인해 그 사회의 속성이 드러나게 하였다. 디킨슨은 현실의 부정성을 드러내면서 자기 시대의 구조화하려는 힘에 대항했다. 이는 저항을 통해 좀 더 성숙한 독립으로 나아가려는 실천적 과제를 반영하는 것이었다. 이것은 초기자본주의 시대의 연장인 후기자본주의 시대와의 공통적인 과제를 보여주는 것이었다. 자본주의의 병폐와 가부장적 비합리성이 남아있는 한 디킨슨의 시는 현대성을 지니는 것이었고 현대의 독자들과 구조적 과제를 공유하는 것이었다. 더 나아가 상품화될 수 없는 인간 영혼을 옹호하기위한 디킨슨의 노력은 미와 진리의 결정체인 시로 살아남아 새로운 맥락 속에서 새로운 의미를 지니는 것으로 재해석될 것이다.
The American Civil War broke out while capitalism was in the process of taking root. Economical differences between the southern states and the northern states were the main reason. The victory of the north guaranteed that the effective capitalistic values became dominant on the basis of factory working. From that time on, commercialization and patriarchy have been strengthened till present time. Emily Dickinson's time and our time have shared capitalistic social system and patriarchy. That is why Emily Dickinson's poems have been read in our time. Two eras share similar social problems resulting in common structural tasks. As long as capitalistic social problems remain, her poems continue to be read. Of course, this is not the only cause her poems are read widely. She represented her woman place of her time as the other only to reveal the shadows of commercialization and patriarchy. She put emphasis on spiritual value to resist commercialization and to reach her world of beauty and truth. She thought of a poet's task as distilling amazing senses from ordinary meanings to get rose attar. She regarded the poets as the martyrs because they wrought their pang in syllable. And they had to grasp the real motives of their time and play prophetic roles with imaginative visionary.
