우리 사회의 소통의 부재를 끊임없이 성찰하고, 구조적 모순을 비판하고, 직접적으로 사회적 참여와 실천을 행하여 우리 사회를 인간적인 사회로 치유하고자 하는 종교조직체나 종교인의 모습은 우리사회에서 인문정신을 구현하고자 하는 대표적인 사례이다. 본 논문은 20세기 초 중국의 반기독교에 대한 문명적 치유에 앞장선 뱅상 레브의 삶에 역사적 의미를 부여함으로써 우리 사회에서의 종교와 사회와의 관계와 소통, 종교의 사회적 실천과 치유에 대해 고찰하였다. 종교는 종교가 뿌리 내리고 있는 사회적 토양 위에서 존재의 진정한 기능을 갖는다. 따라서 종교의 사회적 실천은 어느 시대에서나 필요한 명제이다. 뱅상 레브 신부가 20세기 중국 천주교 내부의 제국주의적 모습을 비판하고 그의 수도회의 입장을 받아들이지 않았다고 하지만, 그의 종교적 신앙이 희석된 것은 결코 아니었다. 그는 당시 중국 사회의 시대적 과제인 반제·반봉건에 대해 끊임없이 성찰하고 참여한 진정한 그리스도인이었다. ‘천주교정의구현전국사제단’이 종교의 사회적 역할을 강조한다고 해서 종교의 본질적 요소인 ‘신앙과 신심’의 중요성을 희석하고 있는 것은 아니다. ‘사제단’이 한국 사회의 시대적인 과제에 대하여 성찰하고 참여하는 것은, 교회가 사회 안에 온존하면서 그 사회의 현실적인 문제와 동떨어져 존재할 수 없다는 자각에서 출발하기 때문이다. 종교는 이 사회에서 치유자의 역할을 충분히 담당할 수 있다고 본다. 종교가 직접 치유할 수 있는 것은 치유하고, 이 사회의 다른 집단이 할 수 있는 것을 그들로 하여금 과감히 치유자의 역할을 감당할 수 있도록 깨우쳐 주어야 한다. 종교의 사회참여는 사회 구조적 상황에 대한 인식과 종교적 성찰의 결합을 통해 이루어진다. 종교의 사회참여가 항상 해당 조직의 생존과 사회적 영향력 확대와 같은 이해 관심에 두어서는 안 된다. 그보다는 전체사회와 사회구성원의 공동선(공익)에 목적을 두어야 사회 공동체의 지지를 획득할 수 있다. 뱅상레브 신부의 중국 선교활동, 그리고 ‘사제단’의 사회참여 활동을 살펴보면, 이른바 공동선에 기초하고 그 사회의 시대적 요구에 적극적으로 실천하는 종교(종교인)의 활동은 사회를 좀 더 민주적으로, 개방적으로 이끌어 이 사회를 공동선의 목적으로 치유하는데 큰 역할을 담당할 것으로 생각된다.

The religious organization or personnel that reflect lack of communication constantly, criticize organizational contradiction, practice social participation directly to embody human oriented society are typical cases of realizing humanities spirit. This article examined Vincent Lebbe who endeavored for civilizational cure against anti-Christianity of China in the beginning of 20th century by giving historical meaning in his life with reference to relation and communication between religion and society, and to social practice and cure of religion. Religion exerts its genuine function on the social foundation where it exists. Accordingly, social practice of religion is essential theme in any period. Although Father Vincent Lebbe criticized imperialistic attitude in the Catholic in 20th century China and did not accept the position of religious orders, it does not mean he gave up his religious faith and belief. He was a genuine Christian who continuously considerde the then current task of anti-imperialism and anti-feudalism in China. Even though Catholic Priests' Association For Justice emphasizes religion's social role, it does not compromise ‘faith and belief’, essentials for religion. Because the participation of them into current issue of Korean society begins from an awareness that church is in the society and cannot be thought separately from real social issue. Social participation of religion can be achieved by a conjunction of an awareness of social structural position, and religions reflection. Religion should not focus on the survival of the organization or expansion of social effect in their social participation. But, it should focus on public benefit(general good) of all members of society to obtain support of social community. With an examination of Vincent Lebbe's Chinese mission activity, and social practice activity in the Catholic Priests' Association For Justice, it is expected that religious activities reacting social demands based on public benefit, may play an important role in leading a society more democratic and open and in healing the society with the aim of public benefit.
