This article analyzes and updates the diverse processes that have characterized democratization in Asian nations since the mid-1980s, as well as estimates the current state of democratic consolidation in each. Based on examination of seven important issues on the path to democracy -- the nature of previous re-gimes, political liberalization, democratic transition, institutional engineering, founding elections, substan-tive democracy, and procedural democracy -- it iden-tifies tasks required to expedite democratic consolida-tion. Although Asian democratization has assumed no uniform or flawless path, great strides both in procedural and liberal democracy over the past dec-ades are widespread. This study is the first to cover all Asian transitions -- in Bangladesh, East Timor, Indo-nesia, Korea, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philip-pines, Taiwan, and Thailand -- from their beginnings through ongoing democratic consolidation.
