본고는 점필재 김종직의 「乇羅歌」에 대한 기존의 논의를 비판하고, 최부의 「耽羅詩三十五絶」과 비교분석을 통해 작품의 구현양상과 의미를 밝히고자 한 것이다. 논의한 내용을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 「乇羅歌」는 기존의 논의가 紀俗詩와 觀風易俗의 의미로 주안점을 두고 살핀 것에 대한 반론이다. 기속시는 각처의 풍속의 산물을 기록하고 간략한 설명을 덧붙이는 것으로 「乇羅歌」 14수는 풍속과 산물만이 아닌 전반적으로 제주의 신화, 역사, 자연 등등 전체의 모습을 담고 있어 이에 적용하기에는 무리이다. 둘째, 관풍역속은 治者의 입장에서 백성들의 삶을 주시하고, 악습이나 폐습을 교정한다고 하였으나 「乇羅歌」 어디에도 악습과 폐습을 운운한 대목은 없다. 또한 김종직은 제주고을을 다스리는 관리가 아니기 때문에 직접적으로 영향을 미칠 수 없었으며, 단지 제주에서 건너온 한 인물이 전해준 제주에 대한 다양한 정보를 자신의 상상력으로 통해 재구성한 것임을 간과한 것으로 보인다. 셋째, 김종직과 교유가 깊었던 최부의 「耽羅詩三十五絶」을 비교분석하여 두 작품이 서로 밀접한 관련을 맺고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 두 작품이 소재로 삼고 있는 공통점을 통해 유사한 내용으로 시적 형상화를 하고 있음을 알 수 있었으며, 이는 최부가 앞서 22년 정도 먼저 지은 김종직의 「乇羅歌」에서 어느 정도 영향을 받았음을 간접적으로 시사하는 대목이라고 하겠다.
