이 연구는 정부에서 추진하는 대학생 해외인턴십 프로그램의 참가자가 인턴십을 성공적으로 수행하기 위해서 어떤 요인이 작용하는 지를 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 미국에서 해외인턴십을 종료한 WEST프로그램 참가자 69명을 대상으로 귀국보고서, 인턴수기, 심층면담에 얻은 자료를 바탕으로 사례분석을 실시하였다. 이러한 연구결과에 따르면 해외인턴십을 성공적으로 수행한 참가자는 사전준비단계에서 강렬한 참가의지를 보였고 참가목표도 분명했다. 또한 어학연수단계에서 영어능력 향상과 구직준비를 위해 다양한 활동을 참여했다. 특히 인턴구직단계에서 인턴십 구직목표를 현실적으로 조정했으며, 스폰서에 전적으로 의존하지 않고 자기구직을 위해 적극적으로 노력했다. 마지막으로 인턴실행단계에서는 철저한 업무수행을 하는 열성적인 직원(hard worker)이며, 동료직원들과 친밀한 관계를 유지하는 것으로 나타났다.
The purpose of this study is to explore the factors of a successful overseas internship program in terms of participant's perspective. The WEST program, which is a maximum of 18-month long term internship program providing English language education, professional internship experience, and travel in the United States, was closely investigated. This study collected participant’s arrival reports, testimonials, and interviews to investigate internship success. Sixty-nine WEST program returnees' data was analyzed and the program success factors were investigated sequentially. The WEST program stages include pre-departure stage, English language education stage, internship placement stage, and internship stage. At the pre-departure stage, it appeared that successful participants were highly motivated and set the distinctive internship goals. In addition, at the English language education stage they actively participated in an English training course and activities for placement preparation. At the placement stage it showed that successful participants aligned the placement goal into their feasible level and attempted to pass the placement interview. Finally at the internship stage, findings showed that successful interns turned out to be hard workers and were able to maintain a cooperative relationship with colleagues at their internship institution.
