Philosophical Meaning of Greek Tragedy

철학은 그리스의 전통 사상과의 갈등과 긴장관계 가운데서 탄생되었다. 고대 그리스에서는 철학적 사유를 옹호하는 신흥 지식인들도 있지만 새롭게 형성되어 가는 혁신적 사유에 대해 반감을 갖고 그의 위험성에 대해 경고하는 전통 사상의 옹호자들도 있었다. 이에 따라 그리스 철학이 그리스 사유방식이나 문명을 대표한다고 보기는 어렵다고 여겨진다. 오히려 신흥사유를 대표하는 철학과 전통적 사유방식의 긴장과 갈등 관계를 예술로 승화시켜 표현하고 있는 그리스 비극이 그리스적인 것을 대표한다고 보는 것이 옳을 것이다. 그리스 비극의 대표라고 할 수 있는 소포클레스의 오이디푸스 왕을 면밀히 살펴보면 새로운 사유와 전통 사유 간의 갈등관계 가운데서 새로이 형성되어 가는 철학적 사유에 대한 준엄한 경고의 메시지를 읽어낼 수 있다. 곧 자의식(hybris)을 토대로 보편적인 지식을 추구하는 새로운 사유 방식은 인간의 운명이나 세상의 섭리(moira)를 탐색하는 도구가 될 수 없는데, 이를 무릅쓰고 철학적 사유로 그와 같은 진리를 탐색하고자 하면 궁극적으로는 파국에 봉착하고 말 것이라는 엄정한 경고를 읽어낼 수 있다. 비극 시인들의 철학에 대한 이 같은 경고를 통해 우리는 다음과 같은 메시지를 읽어낼 수 있다. 첫째, 소크라테스나 플라톤, 아리스토텔레스와 같은 비극 시대 이후의 그리스의 철학자들은 그리스 비극의 준엄한 경고나 비판을 토대로 자신들의 철학을 구축했으며, 둘째, 이에 따라 서구의 철학적 사유는 적어도 비극 시인들의 비판과 같은 정도의 철저한 비판의식이 없이는 넘어서기 어렵다.1. 머리말

Greek Philosophy was formed in the struggle against traditional way of thought. In ancient Greek, we can find the new born intellectuals who stood by philosophers, and also find the group who stood against the newly formed revolutional thought, and warned against them for its danger. Therefore, we cannot say the ancient greek philosophical thought as the representative of ancient Greek. Rather, it may be right to say the Greek tragedy, which sublimated the struggle between traditional and newly born way of thought through art, as the representative of ancient Greek civilization. Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, the finest of Greek tragedy, warned against the philosophical thought, which had been newly formed in the struggle against the traditional way of thought. According to Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, the newly formed way of thought which pursued universal knowledge based on self-consciousness(hybris) cannot be the method of investigation for the destiny of individual man and the providence of the world(moira), and nevertheless, if we try to investigate these kind of truths through the new born philosophical thought, we cannot but be confronted by catastrophe. We can pick up the two meanings in the waning of Greek tragic poets against the new born philosophy. First, Socrates, Platon, Aristoteles, the post tragic era philosophers, built their philosophical system, taking the critic of tragic poets into consideration. Secondly, for that reason, we cannot overcome the western way of thought without the thorough criticism, comparable with the one of ancient Greek tragic poets.
