The missionaries coming to Chosen for the first time introduced and systemized the western modern education and it contributed a lot not only to the development of Korean Christianity but also to the process of Korean modernization. Then when, what opportunity, how, and which subject have the policy of educational missions been established and operated? Did they have the coherent education policy from the beginning? Did the Missionary have some concrete principle about the educational missions dispatching the missionaries to Chosen at first? Was the people of Chosen and early Christians only the passive receivers of policy of educational missions by the missionaries? Through the missionaries' building the educational policy, did the early Christians have opportunities to participate in the process? These questions caused me to undertake this research. To answer these questions, I did analysis to the reports of early missionaries, Allens and Underwood and Moffet. In this process Presbyterian church's educational mission policies were made and they were applied to many mission departments of Chosen's churches especially in Seoul, Pyeongyang and Daegu. These three area's mission departments became ones charged by Northern America Presbyterian. I hope to show the forming process of educational policy in mission work to Korean church with the facts unnoticed by early researches more concretely and make a way to know exactly the course of Korean modern education and the history of early stage of korean churches. I hope to be served as a valuable and basic material to study history of local church in the stage of early Korean churches.
