This paper delves into the syllabification related processes and the role of featural markedness in Mongolian. It is argued that the least marked consonant in the language is dorsal place feature and it is selected by the interaction of the modified cross-linguistic markedness constraints. The featurally unmarked segments are the key factors in repairing undesirable syllable structures created by syllabification and affixation. It is also shown that a consonant with dorsal place feature is the target of assimilation and epenthetic segment, which are typical properties of an unmarked segment (Rice 2007).
