The present study argues that the qualities of the vowels that result from vowel coalescence are determined by the interaction between faithfulness constraints and markedness constraints. The faithfulness constraints that play crucial roles in vowel coalescence are the feature identity constraints that require marked values to be preserved, and desired outputs can be produced by having these kinds of faithfulness constraints outrank markedness constraints. In addition, this paper deals with dialectal variation regarding vowel coalescence and also monophthongization of diphthongs found in some dialects and shows that these phenomena can be accounted for with a small number of independently motivated constraints.
