The vowel system of north-western dialect had changed to 10 vowel system in the 19th century after the monophthongiztion of ‘e, ɛ, ü, ö’, which belong to off-glide diphthong. After that there was a merging ‘e’ and ‘ɛ’ into ‘E’ in western Jeolla province, which made the dialect boundary between west Jeolla and east Jeolla where ‘e’ and ‘ɛ’ are opposing. Since then there has been 9 vowel system in the west and 10 vowel system in the east. However according to the present geographical distribution of Jeolla dialect, ‘ü’ and ‘ö’ which were single vowels appear as ‘wi’ and ‘wE’ which are diphthongs. Also, merging ‘e’ and ‘ɛ’ into ‘E’ is seen in the estern Jeolla province. Therefore this wavering of single vowels such as ‘e, ɛ, ü, ö’ means that there must have been a change in vowel system.
