이 연구는 그동안 학계의 무관심 속에 방치되었던 해방정국의 유교 단체에 대한 조사를 통해 당시 유교계의 흐름을 실증적으로 재구성하려는 목적으로 시도되었다. 이를 위해 필자는 미군정자료를 비롯한 각종 원자료와 비공식 자료를 확보하여 이 분야 연구에 필요한 기초 사료 확대를시도했고, 이를 통해 당시 활동했던 유교 단체의 성격 규명과 참여자의 목록 작성 작업을 실시했다. 이를 통해 이 연구는 당시 유교계가 여러 분파로 나뉘어 경쟁 또는 협력하면서 반탁독립운동과 통일국가건설운동에 적극적으로 참여했다는 사실을 입증했다. 이러한 기초 조사를 통해이 연구는 해방정국을 주도한 유교인들의 대부분이 독립운동가 출신으로 대중의 높은 신뢰를받았고 이들이 주도했던 유교 단체들도 각각 좌우파의 정치계에 큰 영향을 미쳤다는 것을 입증했다. 유교계의 최고 지도자인 김 창숙은 일제하 최고 유학자 정 인보와 무정부주의 계열 인사(이 회영 휘하였던 이 정규, 이 을규)의 지지를 통해 유도회총본부를 구성하여 김 구의 반탁노선에 큰 힘을 실었다. 의병운동과 파리장서사건에 참여했던 유림과 그 후손들도 위 단체들의 대표급으로 활동했다. 구한말부터 일제강점기까지 유교계 독립운동에 관여한 최고 학자 3인에 해당하는 유 인석, 곽 종석, 김 복한의 후손∙문인들이 모두 해방정국에서 적극적으로 참여하고 활동했다는 점에서, 유교 단체와 유교계의 건국운동의‘정통성’과‘연속성’이 입증된다.
This study attempted to investigate empirically the Confucianorganizations during 1945~1948 in Korea and correct the commonlyadmitted ‘myth’, that is, Confucianists were indifferent to found newdemocratic state. Most scholars regard confucianism as a reactionaryideology which supports authoritative regime, on the contrary someregard it as a pro-democratic value for providing sources of thought toovercome the egoistic culture of modern society. But nobody researchesthe modern Confucian political movements and nobody gives attention toConfucianists’ strong contributions for modern Korea. According to this research, Confucian group activities at the time wasvery active and its’ influence was strong too. Confucianists have thesupport of the public in ‘Post-Liberation period’and had high confidenceof all political parties including leftist groups. Confucian organizations atthat time can be classified as follows. (1) pro-Japanese Confucianists’organization: (Ky˘ong-hag-won line) Yudo-hoe. (2) leftist Confucianists’organizations: Taedong-hoe(/Minjok-taedong-hoe), J˘on-guk YugyoY?nmaeng. (3) rightist and centrist Confucianists’ organizations: TaedongYurim-hoe, Yugyo-hoe, Chosun Yurim S˘ong-j˘ong-hoe, J˘on-guk YurimTong-Il-hoe, Chosun Kuk-min Y˘on-J˘ong-hoe, (4) provincial Confucianists’organizations: (J˘on-Nam) Tae-S˘ong-hoe, (J˘on-Buk) My˘ong-Ryun-hoe. (Tae-gu) Tae-S˘ong-hoe.This results teaches the historical continuity between Confucianists’independence movements and their national foundation ones. Confucianists who participated in organized activities of the time weremostly prominent fighters for independence or their descendents,especially ‘Paris Jang-s˘o Movement’(the petition of the Korean Confuciansto the Versailles Peace Conference).
