이 연구는 역사적 계기들에서 어떻게 카렌족 신화가 재해석되었는지를 살펴보며, 신화가 어떠한 양상으로 카렌족과 백인의 관계를 매개하고 있는지를 분석한다. 카렌족과 백인의 관계는 19세기 초반에 시작되었다. 당시 백인 선교사들은 버마족 선교에 만족할 만한 성과를 거두지 못하자 소수종족인 카렌족에게로 발길을 돌렸는데, 그들이 카렌족 선교를 시작한지 얼마 지나지 않아서 초기 기독교의 교세 확장과 유사하게 집단적이고 폭발적인 개종이 카렌족 마을들에서 이루어졌다. 카렌족은 백인형제가 지혜가 담긴 황금책을 가지고 카렌족에게로 돌아오면 고난에서 벗어날 것이라는 내용의 신화를 가지고 있었는데, 당시 버마와 샴왕조간의 전쟁에 시달리고 있었던 카렌족들에게 백인 선교사들은 ‘백인형제’로, 성경은 ‘황금책’으로 받아들여졌던 것이다. 카렌족의 황금책 신화는 카렌족의 역사적인 진로를 결정짓는 강력한 내러티브였다. 그 신화는 문자 속에 갇혀 있지 않고 문자 밖의 현실 세계에 깊이 개입했다. 황금책 신화로 인하여 현실에서 백인과 카렌족의 관계는 처음부터 각별한 의미를 갖게 되었다. 이후로도 백인은 마치 신화를 현실 속에서 실천하듯이 역사적인 계기에서 구원자나 후원자로서의 역할을 감당했다. 카렌족은 이러한 백인의 후원에 기대어 민족의식을 발전시켜 나가고 결국에는 민족주의 운동을 벌여나가며 신화적인 꿈을 현실에서 실천하려 했다. 그 실천 과정에서 현재와 같은 대규모 난민 사태가 발생하기도 했다. 그러나 난민촌에서 신화적 열망은 식지 않고 오히려 강화되었다. 이런 상황에서 구호물자를 가지고 카렌족에게 등장한 백인은 신화의 성취로 받아들여졌다.
This study explores how a myth was created and reinterpreted, and how it has mediated between the Karen and "the White" since the early nineteenth century when relationships between the Karen and the White began. At that time, the white missionaries' efforts in proselytizing the Burman had proven fruitless, so they turned to the Karen instead. No sooner had they begun missionary work among the Karen, when they witnessed a massive conversion. A myth was precisely what contributed to the instant and multitudinous conversion. According to the myth, the White brothers would came back to the Karen with a golden book containing wisdom, and they would be freed from hardships. The Karen had been trapped in prolonged battles between the Burmese kingdom and the Siamese one, and they thus longed for the fulfillment of the myth they considered the White missionaries to be the White Brothers and the bible to be the golden book. The myth of the golden book was a strong narrative that structured the historical events of the Karen after their conversion to Christianity. The myth was not confined to the literal dimension, but deeply intervened in the real world. Specifically, the mythgave a special meaning to the relationships between the two groups. Throughout the history, the White were seen as fulfilling the role of saviors and sponsors,as if they fulfilled the myth. The Karen developed a national identity under the auspices of the White and in the end engaged in a nationalist movement in the hope of the realization of the myth. The movement culminated in the recent influx of refugees. However, the passion for the fulfillment of the myth was not lessened in the refugee camps, but was strengthened. In this situation, the White who came to the camps to deliver aid were interpreted as fulfilling the myth.
