A Study on Personal Criticisms in Liu Shao's 'The Study of Human Abilities'

본 논의는 유소의 『인물지』에 나타난 인물 품평의 의의와 그 목적을 서술하는 데에 있다. 과거에서 지금까지 인물에 대한 올바른 품평은 가장 어려운 문제 중의 하나이다. 물론 그것이 단순히 인물을 품평하는 수준에서 그친다면 크게 문제가 될 것이 없겠지만 그 품평의 목적이 궁극적으로 올바른 관리를 임명하는 데에 있다고 한다면 문제의 성격이 달라질 것이다. 바로 유소가 올바른 관리의 등용이야말로 국가의 흥망성쇠를 결정짓는 최대의 관건임을 강조하여 『인물지』를 서술했던 근거는 여기에 있다. 물론 이러한 유소의 기본 입장이 표면적으로 정치적 중재주의(重才主義)의 입장을 표명하고 있음을 부정할 수 없지만 중요한 점은 그것이 궁극적으로 인간에 대한 총체적 이해를 전제로 하고 있다는 점이다. 다시 말해 그것은 인간 개개인에 대한 분석적이고 다양한 설명을 통하여 인간 본질에 대한 총체적 이해를 시도하였다고 할 수 있다.

The aim of this thesis is to understand the purpose and the significance of the evaluation of personal competence, which Liu Shao investigated in his book, <The study of Human Abilities>. Throughout the history, it has been one of the most difficult questions to make an appropriate evaluation of people's competence. It is so because the final purpose of the evaluation is not just for the mere evaluation of person's ability, but for the promotion of the most competent government officials. This is the reason why Lie Shao published <The study of Human Abilities>, in which he emphasizes that the promotion of competent government officials is a key for the rise and fall of the state. Although Liu Shao appears to support the talent-first view in its political sway, his basic position is, in fact, founded on the comprehensive understanding of human beings. That is, Lie Shao's basic concern focuses on the general study of men, which pursues for the nature of human beings by providing the analysis and various explanations on individuals.
