Although elder mistreatment is rapidly increased and detrimentally affects an older person’s physical, psychological, and social well-being, development and research of the prevention have been sparse. The purpose of this study is to examine effectiveness of the elder mistreatment prevention program for older persons. 124 older persons drawn by quota sampling strategy was random`` divided into experiment group (62) and control group (62). By using six hypothetical elder mistreatment scenarios, the change of perceptions of elder mistreatment and help-seeking behaviors were measured and the change of attitude toward elder mistreatment was also measured by the Attitude toward Elder Mistreatment Scale at the time of pre and post intervention. Findings indicated that experiment group was significantly increased in perceptions of all six types of elder mistreatments including physical abuse, financial abuse, psychological abuse, elder mistreatment in a couple, self-neglect, and neglect. Significant increasement in perceiving seriousness of neglect, self-neglect, physical mistreatment in a couple, and psychological abuse were also found in experiment group. Perceptions of neglect and self-neglect were most increased among six types of elder mistreatments. More positive attitudes toward seeking help in all six types of elder mistreatment were also found in experiment group. where or not older persons perceived a hypothetical situation as a case of elder mistreatment was related with help-seeking behavior. Findings suggest more research on neglect and self-neglect, and point to the importance of development and dissemination of the elder mistreatment prevention program for older persons.
