조만식은 기독교 신앙을 바탕으로 실천하고 행동하는 지성으로서 민중의 지지를 얻었다. 그가 전개한 물산장려운동, 농촌운동, 생활개선운동 모두 현실생활을 이롭게 할 수 있는 생활밀착형 운동이었다. 그것은 그가 믿은 기독교사상과 관서지방의 상업전통을 체화한 신념이 녹아든 결과물이라 할 것이다. 생활개선운동은 현실에서 가장 쉽게 실천할 수 있는 운동이자 민중의 삶을 구체적으로 이롭게 할 수 있는 운동으로서, 조만식의 실천궁행의 가치관을 잘 반영한 운동이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 그의 생활개선운동은 기독교계가 절제운동을 전개하는 가운데 초기의 금주금연운동 중심에서 나아가 생활전체의 절제를 의미하는 소비절약, 생활개선운동까지 그 영역을 확장하는 것과 같은 선상에 있다. 생활개선운동은 정치적 독립이나 경제적 발전, 이를 위한 정부의 보호 등이 불가능한 가운데, 절약․저축, 생활양식 개선이라는 가능한 영역에서의 실천이라는 방향을 취했다. 불필요한 경비를 줄이고 절약․저축생활을 통해 경제적 활로를 개척하고 허례허식에서 벗어나 생활의 합리화를 추구하고자 한 것이다. 이것은 조선인의 경제적 필요가 낳은 산물이었다. 이는 문명개화론에 경도된 1920년대 중반의 생활개선론과는 결을 달리 한다. 조만식의 생활개선운동은 당시의 조선사회가 껴안고 있는 모든 문제를 개선하고, 식민지라고 하는 억압 조건 가운데 최소한의 생존기반을 확보하고 조금이라도 인간적인 일상생활을 누리기 위한 고민에서 비롯된 것이었다. 소비절약, 생활검소, 허례폐지가 구체적인 실천사항이었다. 나아가 생활개선운동은 소비절약을 통한 재정적 안정과 허례 및 구습폐지를 통한 도덕의 부흥을 도모하고 인격화한 개인이 모여 이상사회를 건설하는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 일차원적 생계유지에서 나아가 현실생활의 개선 및 개혁을 통해 민족의 갱생을 꾀했던 것이다.
Cho Man-Sik had the support of the public as practicing and acting intelligence based on the Christian faith. The product encouragement movement, the rural movement and the movement for improvement of living he was leading, that all were the movement associated with better living conditions. All of these originated from the Christianity thought he believed and the commercial tradition of Pyongan province he experienced. The movement for improvement of living was the movement to be easy to do and the movement to improve the people's living. It was representative movement well-expressed the Cho Man-Sik's view of personal practice. The Cho Man-Sik's movement for improvement of living was related to the Christian temperance movement developing from anti-drinking/smoking to economy in consumption and improvement of living. The movement for improvement of living had the field of economizing, saving, living improvement, because the government could not protect the political and economic movement. Therefore, that movement pursued to reduce unnecessary expense, to develop saving, to remove empty formalities and vanity. The movement for improvement of living was a product of people's economic necessity. The movement for improvement of living was different from the living improvement of the mid 1920's. The Cho Man-Sik's movement for improvement of living originated from the thought to secure foundation of existence, to solve all the problems of the Choseon Dynasty, to live human life for survival under the colonial era. Economy in consumption, thrifty living and abolishing empty formalities were specific action agendas. The movement for improvement of living had intentions of the financial security by economy in consumption, the revival of public morals by abolishing empty formalities and old customs, and the realization of an ideal society by moral education. in other words, it signified to develop from foundational maintenance of livelihood to movement of the racial rehabilitation.
