The <Today> programme, BBC Radio 4’s news and current affairs programme, is one of the most popular programmes, reaching over six million listeners every week. It is said to embody the best aspects of BBC journalism. But the Hutton report concluded the BBC’s editorial system was defective. After criticism in that report the BBC moves to strengthen its journalism. This article traces how Today has evolved into the most influential political programme, explores why it has influence on the national agenda, and examines what it has contributed to the BBC journalism.
