본 연구는 동일한 소재를 다룬 텔레비전 환경다큐멘터리가 갖는 서사구조를 비교,분석함으로써 같은 이슈를 다룬 프로그램이 관련 환경이슈에 대한 의미를 어떻게 구성하는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는‘장항갯벌’이라는 소재를 방송한 EBS의 <하나뿐인 지구>와 KBS의 <환경스페셜>의 서사구조를 분석하였다. 분석결과 두 프로그램은 서로 다른 서사구조 방식을 사용함으로써 이슈에 대한 의미구성에 차이가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 먼저 EBS의 <갯벌의 권리>에서는 환경보존의 가치전달이라는 명확한 목적이 있으면서도 기존 환경다큐멘터리가 가지고 있는 설득적인 방식에서 벗어나, 갯벌의 생태계를 있는 그대로 보여주면서 환경보호를 통한 교육적 메시지를 전달하는 측면이 상대적으로 많은 것으로 나타났다. 또한 갯벌 매립을 둘러싼 갈등에 대해서도 양측의 입장을 공평하게 제시하는 경향이 있었다. 그러나 KBS <장항갯벌, 제2의 새만금이 되는가?>에서는 환경의 중요성에 대해 사실에 근거하여 자신의 관점이나 주장을 내세워 특정입장에 대해서 직설적이고도 강력하게 주장을 펼침으로써 환경다큐멘터리의 전형적인 관습을 보여주고 있었다. 이렇게 볼 때, 두 개의 환경다큐멘터리가 동일한 소재를 다루고 있지만 차별화된 서사방식과 장르관습을 통해 관련 환경문제에 대한 의미구성과 환경보존이라는 가치구축 방식에 차이가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
The study is designed to explore the difference of narrative structure and the ultimate meanings of two TV environment documentaries dealing with the same issue. To do this, this study tried to compare the narrative structures of <The Only Earth> of EBS and <Environment Special> of KBS on the ‘Janghang Mudflat’. As a result, the narrative structures of two programs were different in the aspects of story structure and discourse structure. First, <Rights of Mudflat> of EBS was constructed by the structure of ‘Introduction-Conclusion’ to convey subject matters and introduce the issues by ecologically approaching creatures living in mudflat. The program took equally both opinions of pro-development parties and proenvironment parties and showed the issue within the frame of objectivity. <Janghang Mudflat, Does It Become a Second Saemankeum?> of KBS, however, emphasized on conservation instead of development by taking the form of the structure ‘Issue-Solution’. This analysis shows that two environment documentary programs take different narrative structures in the sharp conflict of ‘development’ or ‘conservation’ of environmental issues. In short, it shows that two TV programs restructure an issue ‘Janghang Mudflat’ in a wide variety of narrations instead of reflecting the reality itself without distortions, regardless of the way of constructing narrative structures.
