The aim of this paper is to review the work of a photographer Oksun Kim who portrays images of foreign residents on JeJu Island. I thus discover the relationship between mind and matter, particularly exploring the process of how Jeju as matter emerges in the effete mind functioning as negativity involved in a dialogical consciousness with the living mind, the photographer. Therefore, consciousness which exists between the effete mind and the living mind is to be discovered by the photographer's storytelling. This is consciousness activity to mediate feeling with the experience of action or volition. Thus, the images of foreign residents are the metaphor of the relation of Jeju island and the photographer. In this sense, the work can be interpreted as a self-portrait, telling us what Jeju Island is, that is, the identity of Jeju Island disclosed by way of narrative processes of progression, procession, and transition.
