본 논문은 할리우드 영화「매트릭스」에 나타나는 미국의 캘빈주의적 정치문화를 분석하는 데에 목적이 있다. 캘빈의 정치사상의 주요개념인 신정정치 개념은 이 세상의 실제적인 통치권이 신에게 있으며 모든 권력은 신에게서 유래한다고 규정한다. 이 개념은 캘빈의 예정론에 토대를 두고 있다. 캘빈은 만인이 죄로 인하여 타락한 이 세상에서 신이 구원의 대상을 예정해 놓았으며 정치적인 권력 또한 신의 섭리에 의해 예정되어 있다고 주장한다. 미국의 정치문화 속에 캘빈의 신정정치 개념과 예정론은 시민종교의 형태로 나타나고 있다. 이는 미국의 선민의식과 예외성에 대한 신념으로 표출되기에 이른다. 말하자면 이스라엘을 선민으로 예정하고 그 속에서 그리스도를 구원자로 예정했던 신이 미국을 아메리카의 이스라엘로 예정하였고 미국이야말로 세계를 구원할 선민이자 구원자 국가라는 인식이다. 이와 같은 인식으로 인해 대외적으로 고립외교를 펼치기도 하고, 십자군적 아메리카니즘으로 비화되어 군사개입과 폭력의 사용을 정당화하는 논리로 캘빈주의를 활용되기도 한다. 나아가 비미국적인 가치들을 죄악시 하는 교차수준적인 인식을 보이기도 한다. 이처럼 미국의 정치문화에 나타나는 캘빈주의는 미국의 대표적 대중문화의 하나인 할리우드 영화 속에 다양한 형태로 반영되고 있다. 그 중에 특히 SF영화의 하나인 영화「매트릭스」는 미국의 캘빈주의적인 정치문화를 상징적으로 재현하는 하나의 사례로 간주될 수 있다.「매트릭스」는 거대 컴퓨터 매트릭스에 감염된 인류의 타락을 재현한다. 캘빈의 만인타락의 교리에 입각한 이러한 설정에서 출발하여 이 영화는 그러한 타락으로부터 시온을 구원할 구원자로 네오라는 메시아를 등장시킨다. 이 메시아는 그리스도의 형상으로 등장하며 적그리스도의 이미지로 나타나는 요원 스미스에 대한 투쟁을 통하여 인류를 오염된 거대 컴퓨터 프로그래밍인 매트릭스로부터 구원할 십자군적 사명을 스스로에게 부과하는 미국의 십자군적 아메리카니즘을 상징적으로 구현하고 있다고 볼 수 있다.

Among movies, the Matrix could be regarded as symbolizing these concepts. The movie represents the total corruption of humankind because of a polluted computer matrix. Based on a Calvinistic presumption of total corruption, the movie shows a chosen people, Zion, and a messianic hero, Neo. He is the 'One' who is predestined as a Christ-figure to save Zion. Neo fights Agent Smith whose is featured as an Anti-Christ. Neo and Zion in the Matrix¹ can be understood as an allegory of 'Crusader Americanism' projecting the logic of a Calvinistic struggle.
