인터넷 활용이 어린이 청소년에게 일상화되면서 폭력적인 게임이용을 중심으로 유해정보 노출에 관한 위험이 증가하고 있다. 그러나 이러 한 현상의 심각성과 이에 대한 우려만 증폭되어 왔을 뿐 정작 인터넷 유해정 보 노출을 이해하고자 하는 근본적인 성찰은 미흡했다. 이 연구는 폭력적 내용에의 노출, 선정적 내용의 노출, 낯선 타인과의 채팅을 유해정보로 분류 하였다. 그리고 청소년의 미디어 활용이 대부분 가정과 학교에서의 사회적 맥락에 의해 규정된다는 점을 전제로 이들이 얼마나 유해정보에 노출이 되어 있으며 여기에 영향을 미치는 조건들은 무엇인지에 대해 탐색하였다. 성별이 나 연령에 따라 그리고 인터넷을 주로 어떤 용도로 이용하는가에 따라 폭력 적, 선정적 유해정보의 접촉 양상이 달랐고 낯선 타인과의 채팅의 경우 가정의 대화개방성이 낮은 가정의 청소년이 더 위험에 노출되어 있었다. 반 면, 청소년이 공동이용이나 미디어 이용 관련 규칙의 유무 등 부모의 직접적 개 입이 인터넷 유해정보 접촉에 끼치는 영향은 거의 발견되지 않았다. 개인의 심리적 속성 중에서는 자기통제성이 가장 중요한 요소였으나 그 외에는 유해 정보의 종류에 따라서 영향을 미치는 요소들이 상당히 다르게 나타났다.

As the Internet is becoming a household staple and adolescents’s use of it soaring, exposure to harmful content, including violent online games, is set at the center of attention from both scholarly and policy perspectives. Despite all the social concerns on the real danger of the problem, there has been little research to understand the determinants of such exposure and the social context surrounding it. This study explored the factors influencing the adolescents’ exposure to violent content, sexual content, and encounters with total strangers. As for violent and sexual content, demographic characteristics and Internet use patterns make difference. As for encounters with strangers, openness in communication at home was a key determinant. On the other hand, house rules regarding the Internet use or co-use behaviors with parents do not make any difference. Among psychological factors, the degree of self-control is most important in explaining the exposure to all sorts of harmful content.
