본고는 <이대봉전>이 상당한 인기를 누린 작품임에도 연구가 소략한 점, 그간의 연구가 주로 판각본을 대상으로 이루어지면서 <이대봉전>을 여성영웅소설로 유형 분류한 점 등에 대한 연구사적 반성에서 출발한 것이다. <이대봉전> 이본의 현황을 살펴보았을 때 <이대봉전>은 필사본 계열이 중심을 이루고 있으며, 구활자본 시기에 변개, 개작된 작품인 <봉황대>, <양주봉전>, <이봉빈전> 등이 모본으로 선택한 이본 역시 필사본 계열이었다는 점에 착안하여 본고에서는 <이대봉전> 필사본의 구성적 특징을 구체적으로 분석하여 이 작품이 대중적 인기를 끌며 지속적으로 유통될 수 있었던 원인을 규명하고자 하였다. 아울러 판각본으로의 통속적 변개가 지니는 의미와 한계, <이대봉전>의 자장 안에서 유통된 <봉황대>, <양주봉전>, <이봉빈전> 등의 수용 양상을 논의하여 작품의 소설사적 위상을 온당히 파악하고자 하였다. 논의 결과 <이대봉전> 필사본은 남성의 서사를 통해 군담의 재미를, 여성의 서사를 통해 복수가 실현되는 감동을 동시에 맛볼 수 있도록 서사적 층위를 구성하고 있음을 확인하였다. 필사본은 남녀 주인공이 모두 영웅적 활약을 펼치되 대봉의 ‘국가적’ 차원의 군담서사와 애황의 ‘개인적’ 차원의 의협서사가 각각 전개되다가 작품 후반부에 이르러 통합되면서 대단원의 막을 내리는 것이 그 특징이다. 남성의 군담서사와 여성의 의협서사가 작품 내에서 각각의 기능을 하며 개성적으로 전개되었기 때문에 남녀 영웅이 모두 등장하는 작품들 중에서도 차별성을 드러내어 독자의 흥미를 끌 수 있었던 것으로 보인다. 이러한 <이대봉전>은 판각본으로 출판되면서 통속적 여성영웅의 형상을 부각시키는 방향으로 내용을 변개하였으며, 그 결과 필사본이 지닌 남녀 서사의 구성 층위도 변하였다. 애황의 용모나 태도 등에서 요조숙녀로서의 면모보다는 웅장하고 청수한 기상과 단호함 등을 강조하는 것은 물론이고, 受學 과정에서도 마고선녀를 등장시켜 대봉의 서사와 대비를 이루도록 하였다. 그러나 애황의 영웅적 활약을 부각시키려는 대다수의 삽화가 이전 여성영웅소설들에서 익히 보던 통속적인 것들이라 필사본에서 애황의 서사가 지닌 개성을 오히려 약화시키는 결과를 낳았다. 여성영웅인 애황이 부각될수록 개인적 의협서사의 성격은 약화되고, 남주인공 서사와 마찬가지로 국가적 차원의 군담서사적 성격을 지니게 되었다. 결과적으로 판각본은 애황이 男裝을 한 계기나 국가에 공을 세우고자 했던 본래의 목적을 고려하지 않은 흥미 본위의 변개로 인하여 서사 내적 필연성이나 작품의 완결성이 떨어지는 등의 한계를 보인다고 하겠다. 구활자본 시기에 출판된 <이대봉전> 이본은 판각본 계열보다 필사본 계열이 주종을 이루었다. 아울러 <이대봉전>의 자장 안에서 개작 유통된 작품인 <봉황대>, <양주봉전>, <이봉빈전> 등은 모두 필사본 계열을 수용한 활자본인데, 여주인공을 중심 서사로 설정하여 <이대봉전>을 수용한 <이봉빈전>보다 <봉황대>, <양주봉전> 등이 더 활발하게 유통되었다. 이는 필사본 <이대봉전>의 인기를 증명하는 것일 뿐 아니라 판각본의 통속적 변개가 작품의 서사 정체성을 제대로 구현하지 못했음을 의미하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 필사본이 인기리에 유통된 현황, 판각본 계열의 활자본 이본이 그다지 인기를 끌지 못한 점, 필사본 계열을 수용한 <봉황대>, <양주봉전>, <이봉빈전>의 서사 전개 등을 통해 볼 때 <이대봉전>은 국가적 차원의 남성 군담서사와 개인적 차원의 여성 의협서사가 개성적으로 구현된 필사본 계열을 중심으로 작품의 소설사적 위상을 재검토하여야 할 것이다. 판각본으로 개작되는 과정에서 여타 여성영웅소설에서 보이는 통속적 요소를 취하여 여성의 영웅적 면모를 확대한 이본이 생산되기도 하였으나 판각본은 서사적 필연성, 작품의 완결성 면에서 일정한 한계를 보인다. 본고는 <이대봉전>의 이본 고찰을 통해 이 작품을 여성영웅소설로 이해해온 그간의 연구가 재고될 필요가 있음을 역설한 것으로, 본고의 논의가 작품의 소설사적 위상을 재정립하는 데 일조할 수 있기를 기대한다.

This study was started from the study history's self-reflection on the roughness of the study about Leedaebongjeon that was very popular, and the Leedaebongjeon's classification as female heroic novel based on mainly books printed from wood blocks version. When copies of different edition was researched, the center of Leedaebongjeon was manuscript version, and the primary versions of Bonghwangdae, Yangjubongjeon, Leebongbinjeon etc. adapted in old printed time, were manuscript versions. Paying attention to these properties, in this study, I tried to research the cause that this work had been very popular and was able to be continuously distributed, as analyzing constructional features of manuscript version Leedaebongjeon concretely. Furthermore, I tried to propose the status of the novel history properly by discussing the meaning and limits of the popular alteration to books printed from wood blocks version, and the acceptance aspect of Bonghwangdae, Yangjubongjeon and Leebongbinjeon that were distributed in the magnetic field of Leedaebongjeon. In conclusion, manuscript Leedaebongjeon composed of the narrative layers so as to experience military story's fun through males' narration and the emotional move of the revenge through females' narration. The manuscript was characteristic that as the heroine main character and the protagonist hero altogether took an active part heroically, the military narration of Daebong's national level and the gallantry narration of Aehwang's personal level unfolded respectively and then up to the final, as integrating the two narrations, the story was finished. As the males' military narration and the females' gallantry narration functioned respectively in the work and then the story unfolded characteristically, the story was able to be popular among the works that the heroine main character and the protagonist hero appeared. As this Leedaebongjeon had been published, the narrative alteration was taken toward focusing on the configuration of popular female heroin. As a result, the constructional layer of the male and female also changed. Through Aehwang's look and attitude, magnificent and handsome spirit and decisiveness rather than elegant lady was empathized. Also, during learning courses, through the appearance of Magoseonnyeo, Daebong's narration contrasted with Magoseonnyeo's narration. But as most illustrations that made Aehwang's heroic active highlighted were common in former female heroic novels, the characteristics having Aehwang's narration in manuscript were weaken. As female heroin Aehwang was more highlighted, the characteristic of personal gallantry narration was weaken and the same as hero's narration it has the characteristic of the military narration. As a result, the book printed from wood blocks version was limited in that the narrational inevitability and the completion of works were insufficient because of the modification of the contents for popular literature. In the old book printed book time, the copies of different editions of Leedaebongjeon was printed by manuscript version mainly more than a book printed from wood blocks versions. Bonghwangdae, Yangjubongjeon, Leebongbinjeon etc. that were adapted and distributed in the magnetic field of Leedaebongjeon, were the printed books version adapting manuscript versions. In these works, Bonghwangdae and Yangjubongjeon were distributed more popularly than Leebongbinjeon that set up heroin as main narration. This means that popularity of the manuscript version Leedaebongjeon was very high and the modification of the book printed from wood blocks version could not realize the narration's identity. Judged from the present condition of the manuscript version's wide distribution, the aspects of the different version distribution, what the different versions of old printed books that accommodated books printed from wood blocks versions were not popular, and the narration of Bonghwangdae, Yangjubongjeon and Leebongbinjeon that adapted manuscript version, the novel history's status of Leedaebongjeon must be reconsidered, focusing on realizing the military narration of the national level and the gallantry narration of the personal level. While the copies of the different editions that expanded heroic aspects by adding popular elements of heroic novels in the course of producing as a book printed from wood blocks version, were distributed, the book printed from wood blocks versions are limited in the narrational inevitability and the completion of works. In this study I asserted the necessity of the reconsideration of the status as heroin novel and through this study, I expect the novel history status of this work to be reestablished.
