본 논문에서는 핵티비즘의 개념과 특징에 대한 고찰과 함께 이들의 행동에 대한 대표적인 사례연구(case study) 방법으로 국내와 국외로 구분하여 살펴보고 핵티비즘의 전개과정 분석 및 발전양상을 전망하였으며, 이러한 연구를 바탕으로 향후 핵티비즘에 대한 시사점을 제시하였다. 본 연구의 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 핵티비즘은 온라인 사회운동이 온라인 행동주의로 변화하는 과정에서 보다 실질적인 개념으로 발전한 것으로써 사이버 행동주의와는 달리 위법성의 가능성을 가진다. 둘째, 핵티비즘은 정치적 크래킹(Political Cracking), 행위적 핵티비즘(Performative Hacktivism), 정치적 코딩(Political Coding) 등으로 구분할 수 있다. 셋째, 핵티비즘의 전개과정 및 발전양상은 해커운동을 통한 핵티비즘의 시작, 국제적 이슈에 따른 핵티비즘의 대중화, 그리고 소셜미디어 사회와 결합한 핵티비즘 확산 등으로 구분할 수 있다. 이와 같은 연구결과에 따라 향후 핵티비즘의 발생이 지속적으로 증가할 것으로 보이므로 디지털 사회에서 소셜미디어 등의 확산이 가져다주는 새로운 사회에서의 핵티비즘에 대한 보다 심도 있는 후속연구가 진행되어야 할 것이다. 특히 핵티비즘에 대한 분석 및 대응방안 마련에 있어서 기존의 공경비 중심에서 탈피하여 민간경비 분야에서 중추적인 역할을 수행할 수 있도록 관심을 경주해야 할 것이다.
This research studies a definition and characteristics of hacktivism, and analyzes the developing pattern and growth trend of hacktivism by examining related domestic and international case studies. Based on the results of such study and analysis, several implications of hacktivism are made. The following shows the result. First, in the process of transitioning from a mere online social movement to an online activism, hacktivism has gained a rather actualized concept, and unlike online activism it possesses a possibility of illegality. Second, hacktivism can be categorized into: political cracking, performative hacktivism, and political coding. Third, the developing pattern and growth trend of hacktivism exhibit that: 1. hacktivism simply starts off by hackers, 2. it is followed by the popularization of the initiated hacktivism with regard to related international issues, 3. and finally the spread of the hacktivism through social network communities. According to the above-mentioned results, the frequency of hacktivism is only to be increased; therefore, in this new era of digital community with increasing use of social network services, thorough follow-up studies must be done on the topic. Especially, in terms of analysis and suggestion of countermeasures on hacktivism, the studies must break out from the conventional public-budget-focused study, and focus on figuring out how such countermeasures can be an integral part to private security.
