This study investigated the relationships between the test mode (paper-based vs computer-based) and test performance on English exams administered in Korean high schools. Data were collected from 66 high school students’ scores and were analyzed by employing a repeated measures t-test. The major findings of the study were as follows. First, there was a significant test mode effect: the paper-based test (PBT) scores were higher than the computer-based test (CBT) scores. Second, the effect of test mode on test performance varies with item type: there was a statistically significant score difference between question items requiring the examinees to identify specific facts, while there was little difference between question items requiring them to choose a general idea. Third, the effect of the test mode on test performance was a little higher for the intermediate level students than for the advanced or the low level students. In general, however, the test mode effect occurred in most students regardless of their level of language proficiency. These findings emphasize the importance of careful consideration of test mode effects when converting exams from paper-and-pencil to computer-delivery.
