The study is to investigate the relationship between metacognitivestrategies and critical reading development. This investigation has tworesearch questions: 1) how are metacognitive strategies realized inEnglish reading class?; 2)how are metacognitive strategies interpretedin terms of critical reading development? This study employedquantitative and qualitative methods. The findings of this study indicatethat there is a statistically significant difference in the use of readingstrategies, and reading with a metacognitive approach helps studentscritically understand texts from different perspectives by questioningand reflecting upon their opinions. This suggests that students wereled to use certain strategies while reading books extensively. Finally, the results of this study suggest that pedagogical methodologiescentered on metacognitive critical thinking need to be taught in theclassroom, which would positively influence the student critical readingand critical thinking skills. Incorporating metacognitive strategies isessential to developing engaged, self-directed learners.
