향토사 교육에 관한 연구는 향토사의 인식에 따라 역사 교육을 위한 하나의 교재이며, 동시에 수업 방법으로 연구되고 있다. 또 다른 연구는 향토 자체의 역사로 연구되고 있다. 향토사 교육면에서도 전자는 교재로서 향토사를 교육하고 있으며, 후자는 향토 자체의 역사로 교육을 실시하고 있다.이에 향토사교육은 새로운 역사관, 교육과정의 지역화와 지방자치제의 실시로 인하여 향토 자체의 역사로 연구와 교육이 이루어져야 한다. 따라서 본고에서는 지역 사회 문제 중 가장 심각하고, 학생들의 관심이 많은 환경 문제를 통하여 지역의 정체성을 탐구하는 향토 자체로서의 향토사 교육 방법을 제시하고자 한다. 즉 서천 지역의 환경 운동사를 통하여 서천지역의 자연 환경, 환경 오염원의 역사적인 배경, 지역의 생산물, 주민들의 문제 해결 방법 등을 살펴보고 서천 지역의 지역성을 밝히는 향토 자체로서의 향토사 교육 방법을 구안하고자 한다.
