The Construction of meaning through Web-based text reading as a process of problem solution on Social Studies Instruction Choi Byung Mo Korea National University of Education Park Gil Ja Major in Social Science Education Graduate School of Korea National University of Education This study is to find characteristics shown in the process of meaning construction through web-based text reading which is used as a process of problem solution in social study instruction. First, the meaning of web-based text will be discussed. Second, meaning construction through web-based text reading as a process of problem solution is examined, followed by characteristics found in real social study instruction in relation to the context of class of web-based materials and meaning construction as a process of problem solution. It is concluded that the context of class of web-based text reading is characterized as meaning construction, in which students understand social context through searching for real social problems, rather than searching for knowledge considered in the context of curriculum. The process of meaning construction follows a regular procedure of problem solution ‘problem area, checking problems, intensive searching for the problems, arriving at the conclusion'. In this process, students understand sociocultural context through the meaning construction of denotation, connotation, and myth. It is particularly found that students are involved in meaning construction more actively through writing about pros and cons and debating even though students experience some intellectual confusion by such activities.
