본고는 새로운 역사 교육으로 주목을 받고 있는 향토사교육에 관한 연구 현황을 향토사 인식과 교육, 향토사교육의 목표, 내용, 방법으로 나누어 살펴보고 향토사교육의 연구 방향을 제시하였다. 향토사교육은 향토사의 인식에 따라 역사 교육을 위한 하나의 교재이며, 동시에 수업방법으로 연구되고 있다. 또 다른 연구는 향토 자체의 역사로 교육하는 연구가 있다. 전자는 교과로써의 향토사가 아닌 교재로서 향토사를 교육하는 차원에서 연구가 이루어졌다. 후자는 향토사를 향토 자체의 역사로 보고 교육을 실시하고 연구하고 있다.이에 향토사교육은 새로운 역사관, 교육과정의 지역화와 지방자치제의 실시로 인하여 이제 향토 자체의 역사로 연구와 교육이 이루어져야 한다고 제시하였다.


Problems with the Study of Local History Education and a new Direction Yoo Seung Gwang This article covers the recognition and education of local history as well as aim, content and method of local history education, through the research of local history education, a new history education. It also presents a new direction of local history study. So far, local history education has been used as a means to teach history education. But it depends on the knowledge of the teacher and the degree of the recognition of local history. It has been studied as a teaching method as well as a teaching material. It is also studied as a local history itself. The former is a study of local history as a teaching material, not as a subject of local history. The latter gave an opportunity to educate local history as a history of the local area itself. But it explains the history education of local history only in theory, and the teaching content along with aims doesn't extend the level of local history teaching materials. The education of local history is needed to establish the identity of the local area. The need to establish the identity was recognized through the change of historical views, the localization of curriculum, and the local autonomy. Therefore, I contend that local history should be studied and educated as a history of local area itself, based on the results of the research conducted up to this point.
