본 연구는 초·중·고 시범학교 통일교육의 효과성 지표를 개발하여 효과적인 초·중·고 시범학교 통일교육의 방향성 및 발전방안을 모색해보고자 실시된 탐색적 연구이다. 통일교육의 직접 대상인 청소년에게 미칠 수 있는 영향력을 고려하여 2011년, 2012년 통일교육 시범학교 연구과제 현황 및 연구목표, 통일부에서 제시하고 있는 통일교육의 목표 및 주안점, 선행연구 분석을 통한 통일교육의 효과, 초·중·고 학교급별 특수성 등을 교차분석하여 측정개념들을 구성하였다. 이러한 과정을 통해 구성된 설문지를 초·중·고 각 2개 학급 60명씩 총 360명을 대상으로 요인분석을 실시하여 초등학교의 경우 총 21문항 5개 요인으로(Cronbach’s Alpha a=.892) 통일환경 4문항(a=.779), 통일의지 3문항(a=.829), 통일관 4문항(a=.686), 통일방안 4문항a=.698), 통일교육 6문항(a=.647), 중학교 통일노력 6문항(a= .845), 통일관 5문항(a=.847), 통일의지 3문항(a=.818), 통일의식 5문항(a= .787), 통일방안 6문항(a=.761), 통일활동 5문항(a=.757), 안보관 6문항(a= .703)의 총 7개 영역으로 총 36문항이(a=.959) 개발되었다. 고등학교는 총 23문항으로(a=.929), 통일의식 5문항(a=.904), 통일의지 3문항(a=.753), 민족공동체의식 5문항(a=.753), 통일관심 4문항(a=.749), 통일방안 6문항(a=.736)의 총 5개 하위영역으로 개발되었다.
