본 연구는 1993년부터 2015년까지 한국 사회과교육에서 이루어진 세계시민교육 관련 경험적 연구(empirical studies)의 동향을 분석하였다. 이를 위해 역사·지리·사회교육을 포함한 사회과교육 9개 등재지에 발표된 논문 중 ‘세계시민교육’을 핵심 주제로 다룬 선행 연구를 검색하고, 사회교육을 포함한 양적·질적·혼합적 연구 방법을 사용한 경험적 연구 25편의 논문을 최종 분석대상으로 선정, (1) 시기별, (2) 연구 방법별, (3) 대상별, (4) 주제별로 내용을 분석하고 연구 동향을 탐색하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 향후 세계시민교육을 위한 사회과교육의 학술적 노력에 대한 제언과 실천적 과제에 대한 시사점을 제공한다.
This study reviewed the empirical research on global citizenship education within social studies published in KCI (Korea Citation Index) journals for the past two decades. Under the umbrella theme of ‘global citizenship education,’ the authors searched for articles that were published in 9 KCI journals in the field of social studies education including history, geography, and social science education, selected 25 empirical studies for the data of this research, and analyzed them based upon the four following criteria: (1) periods, (2) methods, (3) subjects, and (4) themes. Tracing the characteristics and themes found in the group of literature and investigating the trend of global citizenship education research within social studies, this research sought to provide practical implications for the teaching and learning of global citizenship in the realities of school settings and move the field forward to the next moment.
