This manuscript was written for the purpose of studying Jo, Ji-Hun's essay. In particular, it was written on purpose to throw light on the various aspects of Ji-Hun's essays. Ji-Hun's essays clearly show a tendency to follow the formal essay which is written by the needs of the times more than the informal essay. He chiefly used a direct and manly formal style when he wrote an essay. I divided Ji-Hun's essays into his pursuit of traditional beauties, his insight into the desire of human, his aesthetics of a stone and the Zen Buddhism, his informal essays, and his classical scholar's mind and participating in realities of life. Considering the fact that he achieved a lot of good results as a poet and a Koreanologist, it was the inevitable result that he wrote many essays about the pursuit of traditional beauties. He was a scion of Confucian scholars' family in Yeongnam and a lecturer of Buddhism school in a temple. So his career which was combined Confucian intelligence with Buddhistic intelligence was affecting making his essay more fertile and various. The study of Ji-Hun's essay has to be developed as a field of study about Jo, Ji-Hun later. This manuscript has just taken the first step, but I hope the day will come when more studies of essay begin in earnest.
