The purpose of this study is to illuminate the substance of the literary identity of Hyo-Seok Lee by analyzing his fifteen critical essays and several miscellanea. His criticism has been given not much weight in his whole literature because of trying to analyze his criticism that has been a genre requiring to directly express one’s own positions, views, judgements and so on. But his early literature had been started as one of the accompanied writers for the realism. His realism had changed with different tendencies of his inconsistent attitudes produced by his literary faith incapable of linking himself with the realism. Finally, his attitudes had related not to his negating the orientalism but to his cognizing a great framework of the Joseon’s literature in the East Asia as a bridge toward the ‘worldly dimension.’
