김종삼은 과작이라 할 만큼 적은 수의 작품을 남겼음에도 불구하고 다양한 의미의 세계를 구축하며 전후의 시단에서 자신만의 고유한 자리를 만든 작가이다. 기존 연구자들은 그의 시가 가지고 있는 여러 특성들을 하나씩 펼쳐 보이며 활발한 논의를 진행하였으나, 그의 시 전체를 포괄하는 논점을 제시하는 데에는 미진한 성과를 보였다. 이에 이 글은 기존 연구의 성과와 한계를 바탕으로 김종삼의시를 관통하는 특성을 의식적인 측면에서 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 밝히는 데에 그의 초기작 「園丁」이 그 기점으로 작용하였다. 「園丁」은 시인으로서 첫 걸음을 시작하는 김종삼이 세상에 던지는 출사표로 읽힐 만큼 시인의세계관과 내면 의식이 잘 드러나는 문제적 작품이다. 시 창작에 대한 풍부한 상징이 돋보이는 이 시에서 김종삼은 언어를 사용하는 시인이라면 숙명적으로 질 수밖에 없는 원죄의 순간을 포착하고, 이를 자신의 고유한 죄로 인식한다. 이 글은그의 시에 반복적으로 나타나는 죄의식을 시인으로서의 자의식과 연관하여 고찰하고, 김종삼이 이러한 죄의식을 바탕으로 참된 시인의 길을 모색하는 와중에 이질적으로까지 보이는 상이한 시적 양상을 포괄하게 되었음을 논구하였다. 시인으로서의 사명을 다하지 못하고 있다는 죄책감은 시인이란 어떤 존재인가에 대한 성실한 물음에서 비롯되며 이는 시인으로서 제대로 사명을 다해야 한다는소명 의식으로 귀결된다. 전후의 시대를 살아가면서 이 시기 시인의 사명에 대해치열하게 고민한 김종삼의 시적 태도는 지금까지도 그의 시에 울림을 더해주는 주된 원인으로 작용한다.
Kim, Jong-sam is a significant poet to explain the development process of Koreanpoetry in the postwar days. Although he left few poems, he had built a varietyof meanings in his poetry so he created a unique place of its own in Korean literaturehistory. Previous researchers have represented the various characteristics of his poetrybut have not provided the overall features yet. Therefore, based on these resultsand the limits, this paper attempts to explain the one characteristic that across thecharacteristics in terms of consciousness. Kim's early poem The Gardener is the key text for this paper. This poem wasthe first step to start as a poet which shows Kim's view of the world as well ashis self-consciousness. In this poem, the poet is compared to the gardener and he,as a poet, committed an original sin which are inseparable from every poet. Asa sinner, he branches three directions that are closely related to the aspects of thefruits in The Gardener ; to admire the pure world, to witness the misery of thereal world, and to connect the pure world with the real one. Even though the threedirections seem irrelevant, all of them are based on the poet's fateful sin whichhe thinks his own's, not others'. In Kim, Jong-sam's poetry, he continuously blames himself because he believeshe couldn't fulfill the mission of the poet. This paper suggests that Kim's self-blameshows Kim's vocation as a poet. As Kim kept questioning what a real poet shoulddo in the postwar days, it makes his poetry more meaningful.
