이 연구는 포스트모던 그림책을 분석하고 그것의 수사적 전략과 특징을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 포스트모더니즘 그림책은 패러디, 메타픽션, 꼴라주, 다중성 등의 기법이 발견되는 작품들을 종종 지칭한다. 이 글에서는 『THE RED BOOK』, 『Black and White』, 『쉿, 책 속 늑대를 조심해』를 선택해서 포스트모던 그림책의 특성과 유형을 검토했다. 세 작품은 비선형성, 불확정성, 다중적 관점과 유희성이라는 포스트모던적 공통점이 발견된다. 그럼에도 불구하고 구성에서 흥미로운 차이를 보인다. 『THE RED BOOK』은 이질적 공간에 거주하는 소년과 소녀의 만남을 대칭적 거울구조로 조형하고 종내는 허문다. 열린 결말을 예고하는 마지막 장면은 여운을 남긴다. 선형적 서사의 흐름을 깨고 개방적이고 입체적인 그림 읽기를 권장한다. 『쉿, 책 속 늑대를 조심해』 는 텍스트를 인용하고 변주하는 연쇄적 구성을 통해 이야기의 유희성을 반복한다. 그림책에 등장하는 인물들이 동일한 공간에서 만나 사건이 좌충우돌하며 예측불가의 상황을 연출한다. 『Black and White』는 서로 다른 이야기가 하나로 수렴되고 동시에 발산을 예고하는 다중적, 입체적 읽기를 선보인다. 꼴라주 혹은 몽타주의 비선형성이, 경계를 허물고 수렴하고 발산하는 이야기의 구성을 부각한다. 우리는 이 연구를 통해 포스트모던 그림책들의 서사 전략과 유형을 이해하고 그것의 미적 가치를 살펴보는 기회를 갖게 될 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the picture books that have the strong post-modern tendencies. Also, this study aims to reveal the rhetoric stragies and forms thereof. The post-modern picture books refer to the works in which parodies, meta fictions, collages, multiplicity, etc. are often found. This study selected the following post-modern picture books: 『The Red Book』, 『Black and White』 and 『Beware of the Storybook Wolves』 in order to review the characteristics and types of the post-modern picture books. The aforementioned three books share the post-modern similarities such as nonlinearity, uncertainty, multiple perspectives and playfulness. Nonetheless, there are also some interesting differences in the configuration between these books. 『THE RED BOOK』 expresses the meeting between the boy and girl in a heterogeneous space with a symmetrical structure and then destroys it in the end. The last scene predicting an open end leaves a lingering imagery. It breaks the conventional flow of a linear narration. Instead, it recommends reading the pictures openly and multi-dimensionally. 『Beware of the Storybook Wolves』 repeats the playfulness of the story through the sequential configuration that quotes and varies the texts. The characters appearing in this picture book meet in the same space and create incidents with a great deal of trouble. That is, they create a series of unpredictable situations. 『Black and White』 presents the multiple and three-dimensional reading experience through the convergence and divergence of difference stories. It presents the nonlinearity of a collage or montage through the story composition that converges and diverges while breaking down the boundary. We would have an opportunity to understand the characteristics and types of the post-modern picture books through this study. Moreover, we would be also able to examine the great expression rhetorics of the post-modern picture books.
