Purpose: This study was performed for the purpose of investigating tourists attraction strategies of Japan and deriving implications from them for Korean domestic consumption industries, particularly distribution industry. Research design, data, and methodology: As a exploratory study, we made use of data which are released from Japanese government and public institution. Results: First, diverse tourism merchandises will have to be developed for Chinese tourists. Second, as economic factors such as exchange rate fluctuation cannot be ignored, such programs that may be affected less by economic reasons will have to be developed for foreign tourists who once visited Korea to encourage their revisiting. Third, government will have to focus on establishing and securing core tourism infra to attract tourists, and local governments will have to develop regional programs suitably specialized for this infra. Fourth, various programs lead to increase chinese tourists. Finally, regional tourism promotion policies will have to implemented to spread tourists concentrated on the Seoul metropolitan area to the whole country. Conclusions: This study provides the implication that differentiated strategies are necessary to attract foreign tourists at department stores including tax free shops as well as at traditional markets because increase of foreign tourists hugely affects domestic consumption industries and distribution industry.
