현대 영미 분석철학계에서 논의되고 있는 인과 이론의 종류는 매우 많지만 다수의 철학자들은 이런 이론들 가운데 뚜렷하게 나타나는 몇 개의 흐름이 있다는 것을 주장한다. 이 논문에서 필자는 J. 쉐퍼와 N. 홀의 이런 주장을 검토해서 이들이 주장하는 인과 이론의 구분을 받아들일 경우 이 구분은 인과와 밀접한 관계를 맺는 다른 개념들, 특히 설명과 도덕적 책임에 대해서 어떤 관계를 갖는지를 추적한다. 이 논의를 통해서 필자는 의존(또는 확률-증가), 설명, 그리고 도덕적 책임이 하나의 개념적 클러스터를 이루며 이 개념적 클러스터에 산출(또는 과정-연결)은 포함되지 않는다는 것을 논증한다. 그리고 이 발견이 자유의지에 관한 철학적 논의에 새로운 출발점을 제공해 줄 수 있다는 것을 논증한다.
Although there are many theories of causation which are seriously discussed among contemporary analytic philosophers, it is often claimed that there are some salient tendencies among these theories. In this paper I will examine such claims by J. Schaffer and N. Hall. After I examine their claims, I will suggest that only a particular factor of causation, namely dependence are closely related to the notion of explanation and moral responsibility. After that, I will argue that this discovery provides a new perspective on philosophical debates concerning free will.
