이 글에서는 고소설에 수용된 전쟁 소재의 기능을 살펴보고, 이러한 전쟁 소재가 일반화되면서 빈번하게 등장하게 된 여성영웅 형상의 양상과 의미에 대해 논의해 보았다. 임진왜란과 병자흐란의 전란을 치른 후인 조선후기에 이르면 전쟁을 주요 소재로 하는 군담소설(영웅소설)들이 많이 등장한다. 실제 전투에 참여하여 군공을 세우고 입신양명하는 여성영웅이 능상하는 여성영웅소설들도 이 시기에 활발하게 향유되었다. 고소설, 특히 창작군담소설의 경우에 전쟁 소재는허구성이 강하며 점차 관습화되고 정형화된 모습을 보이지만 작품의 주제를 형상화하는데 다양한 계기로 작용한다. 여성영웅소설에서는 이러한 전쟁 소재가 여성주인공이 공적인 영역에서 자신의 능력을 드러내고 인정받을 수 있는 계기와 수단으로 쓰이며, 주인공이 추구하는 가치나작품의 지향점에 따라 그 의미와 기능에서 세부적인 차이를 보인다. 여성영웅소설에 등장하는 여성영웅 형상은 전란 후의 변화된 사회상과 인식을 반영하여 나타나게 된 것으로 보이는데, 고소설속의 여성 형상들이 대체로 남성과의 관계 속에서 재현되고 있는 것에 비해서 영웅적 여성 형상은 좀더 독자적인 면모를 보이고 있으며, 이로 인해 조선시대의 유교적 이데올로기 내에서의 여성 재현 방식에서 벗어나 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다고 여겨진다. 여성영웅 형상은 영웅적인 삶을 사는 여성 인물을 형상화함으로써 여성의 힘과 능력에 대한 인식의 폭을 확대시킨다고 할 수 있으며, 다양한 여성 인물의 형상화에 기여한다. 이러한 여성영웅 형상은 여성들 스스로의 자아 의식이나 현실비판 및 인생에서의 지향점을 드러내며 그 과정에서 여성에 대한 당시 사회의 인식과 기대를 반영하고 있다는 점에서 여성의 현실과 이상을 반영하고 있다고 보인다. 특히 여성영웅 형상은 근대 이전에 이루어진 여성성에 대한 인식의 또 다른 한 면모를 보여준다는 점에서그 의의를 가지는 것으로 볼 수 있을 것이다.

This thesis is about the function of war motif in Kososeol, and the aspects and meaning of the representation of female hero. In the late period of Chosun-Dynasty, (after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and the Manchu Invasion of 1636) war motif popularized in Kososeol, In Kososeol, war motif shows a tendency to Formalize, but it contribute to the formation of the theme in various ways, In female heroic novel, war motif function as an opportunity to advance to public area when a heroin begin to go out into the world. The representation of female hero is an extraordinary image of woman in korean narrative tradition, A heroine in the female heroic novel, disguise as a man, conduct war, and occupy a high social position. Sometimes, the image of female hero regarded as very unreal, fantastic image for it's powerful, heroic imagery. But physical and spiritual power is the quality belong to male and female. As a matter of fact, women are and have been heroic, but the androcentric culture has often been overlooking female heroism. Therefore the image of female hero suggest many things about femininity. This kind of female hero shows the hidden abilities of woman and social consciousness about femininity. And the image of female hero reveals self-consciousness of woman and criticize the androcentric society, Therefore the image of female hero reflect the ideal and the real of woman simultaneously. Especially, the aspects of the representation of female hero shows pre-modern conception of female identity.
