조선후기는 유교적 예법이 강화된 시기로써 여성의 출입이 자유롭지 못했다. 그러나 이러한 시대적 상황에서도 몇몇 여성들이 여행 체험을 했고, 그 기록을 남겼다. 비록 그 여행의 대개가 남성 가족 구성원에 의해서 거나 또는 가족 행사 차원으로 이뤄진 것이지만 규방에만 매여 있던 여성들에게는 평생에 남을 경험이었다 해도 과언이 아닌 것이다. 따라서 비일상적인 체험은 여성들로 하여금 자유로운 여행에 대한 욕망을 드러내게 하면서 ‘비일상적인 자아’의 모습을 보여준다. 그럼에도 불구하고 가족과 함께 한 여행은 여성을 가족 안으로 환원시키는데, 가족과의 관계에서 자신의 위치를 확인하는 ‘규범적 여성 자아의 재확인’이 이뤄지는 것이다. 이 과정에서 여행에 대한 욕망과 규범적 행동 사이에서 갈등하는 모습도 확인할 수 있다. 여행에서 돌아온 여성들은 일상으로 안전하게 복귀한다. 일상으로 돌아온 여성들은 여행 이전과 다름없어 보이지만 여행 이전과 이후의 여성 자아는 질적으로 변화한 상태라고 짐작해 보았고, 그 근거로써 이 여성들의 여행 기록을 들었다. 여성들의 여행 기록은 여행을 바탕으로 하고 있지만 그 이상의 의미를 가지는바 자아를 재발견하는 행위로서의 글쓰기이며, 자신의 삶에 이전과 다른 새로운 의미를 부여하는 글쓰기인 것이다. 이러한 맥락에서 봤을 때, 이 여행 기록은 ‘실존적 글쓰기’라고 할 수 있다.
Late Joseon, the rule of Confucianism was strengthen ever before therefore woman's in and out was repressed. A few women traveling and they leave their writings in despite of restrain situation. The experience of traveling was the most dramatic moment on their whole life escape from their own space, even though most of their traveling was following their husbands or participating the family's ceremony. These unusual experiences make the women express their desire to traveling and shown their 'unusual ego' never shown before. Nevertheless, traveling with their family was recognized that she was just a member of family and 'reconfirm their status in traditional situation' interacted with their family. In the process of confirmatory reaction, they were in problem between desire to traveling and status in traditional situation. Women came back safely from the traveling to their usual life. Even thought their life was shown very common, but through these travel writings as a basis, I thought 'Woman's ego' had changed qualitatively comparison with before the traveling. Women's travel writing is just about their travel, but it has an implied meaning. Writing is not only the process of finding their ego but also new meaning was created to their life by themselves. In view of the results so far achieved, travel writing works as a 'existential writing'.
