이 논문에서는 홍명희의 역사소설 임꺽정을 여성주의의 시각에서 고찰해 보았다. 임꺽정에는 강하고 주체적인 여성상과 의좋은 부부상이 자주 등장하며, 남녀평등 사상을 구현하는 등장인물들의 언동이 두드러지게 그려져 있다 . 그러한 특징은 임꺽정이 조선 후기에 비해 상대적으로 남녀차별이 심하지 않았던 16세기를 배경으로 한 역사소설인 데다가 , 주요 등장인물들이 봉건체제로부터 이탈하여 도적패에 가담하는 민중들로 설정되었기에 가능했던 것이다 . 또한 홍명희는 남녀평등에 대한 확고한 소신을 지니고 있었고 , 식민지 치하에서 민족의식의 보존을 위해 역사소설을 쓴다는 계몽적인 의도를 지니고 창작에 임했으므로, 임꺽정에서 조선시대 여성들의 성격과 생활을 미화한 측면이 있었다고 생각된다. 그러나 작품의 후반부인 화적편에 이르면 주인공 임꺽정은 봉건적인 남녀차별을 당연시하는 통념적인 남성으로 변모하고 , 임꺽정의 아내 운총을 비롯한 대부분의 여성인물들은 타자화된 채 적극성을 상실한 평범한 여성으로 전락한 것으로 그려지고 있다. 이러한 변모는 홍명희가 화적편을 연재하던 무렵에 조선왕조실록에 처음 접하고 실록의 내용을 수용하여 소설을 창작해나간 데서 초래된 것이라 볼 수 있다 .
In Lim, Kkeok-jeong, a historical novel by Hong, Myung-hee, there often appears description of a strong and independent woman or description of a happy couple. We can also find characters' speech and action embodying an idea of sexual equality in it. These features are caused by the fact that Lim, Kkeok-jeong is a historical novel about the Chosŏn dynasty in the sixteenth century, when sexual discrimination was not so serious as in the late Chosŏn dynasty. And by the fact that its main characters are the people seceding from the feudal system. Hong, Myung-hee had firm opinion about sexual equality and an enlightening intention that he wrote a historical novel to advocate nationalism. So he described characters and lives of Chosŏn women bright and beautiful in Lim, Kkeok-jeong. But in 'The Bandit', the last part of this novel, Lim, Kkeok-jeong changed into a man of common idea taking feudal sexual discrimination as a matter of course. In addition, most female characters including heroine Un-chong are described as ordinary women losing positiveness in this part. This change seems to be caused by the fact that the writer read Veritable Records of the Dynasty of Chosŏn for the first time and accepted to his novel greatly when he wrote 'The Bandit'.
