이 논문의 목적은 중세 한문문명권의 여성 지성에 관한 논의를 한문 글쓰기가 가능했던 여성 문사들에 한정하는 관행화된 시각에 문제를 제기하는 데있다. 조선은 한문과 언문이 공동문어와 민족어의 위계 속에서 신분과 성별에따라 그에 대한 접근 가능성이 현저하게 달랐던 중세 이중언어사회의 보편성을 잘 보여주는 사회이다. 이 글은 중세의 이중언어체계에 기반한 조선에서공동문어인 한문이 여성 지성의 구축과 발현에 과연 필수적인 것이었을까 하는 의문에 대한 거친 답변이라고 할 수 있다. 논의의 순서는 다음과 같다. 우선 중세 유교사회에서 지성의 개념을 ‘사물에내재한 이치를 깨닫고 실천하는 정신’으로서 규정하고, 파편적인 지식이나 해박함의 차원을 넘어 도덕적 본체에 대한 자각과 실천을 요구하는 개념으로 파악하였다. 2장에서는 지적인 여성을 가리키는 여사(女士)의 용례를 통해, 비록한문 글쓰기의 주체가 아니었더라도 광범위한 한문 글읽기를 통해 지성의 구축에 힘썼던 여성들에 대해 논의하였다. 3장에서는 「열녀전」에 실린 철부(哲婦) 즉 ‘말 잘하는 똑똑한 여성’의 일화에 주목하여, 여성 지성의 발현이 말하기를 통해서 이루어지는 측면을 살폈다. 4장에서는 중세 이중언어체계에서 한문에 비해 상대적으로 열등한 위치를 점했던 언문과 구술의 영역에서도 여성 지성의 창출이 가능할 수 있었음을 논의하였다.
The purpose of this paper is to suggest a problem how essential an ability of writing in Chinese character was to construct and reveal women's intelligence in Middle Ages. As everyone knows, Joseon Korea was a society of Diglossia where the order of rank between Chinese character and Hangul was established by their social status and gender. Opportunities of women's learning 'letter'(Chinese character), even if the upper class, was very restricted in that society. That's why I suggest in this paper a different viewpoint about women's intelligence in Middle Ages. In Confucian society like Joseon, Intelligence was regarded as spirit that could study hard to seek the truth, and realize reason of the universe. In addition, an intelligent must have self-consciousness of ethical agent and try to realize ethical virtue, Deok(德). According to this concept of intelligence,it was not exclusive property of the educated elite or the upper class who were able to read and write in Chinese character. Intelligent women called Yeosa(女士) tried to build their intelligence through reading books in Chinese character, who they could not write anything in it. In the Biographies of Women (Yeolnyeojeon), bright and eloquent female speakers, called Cheolbu (哲婦), revealed their intelligence by speech, not by writing. Also, reading books written in Hangul and listening to knowledge of Confucian's canons were very important methods that many women commonly choose to improve their intelligence in Joseon.
