이 논문은 여성의 정조에 대한 가부장적 이데올로기가 가득 담겨있는 셰익스피어의 『오셀로』(Othello)를 중심으로 번역자의 젠더가 어떻게 서로 다른해석과 번역을 낳는 지를 분석한 것이다. 본 연구에서는 세 명의 남성 번역가들의 번역과 세 명의 여성 번역가들의 번역을 중심으로 주로 성담론이 담긴대사들의 번역을 중심으로 여성 번역가와 남성 번역가의 문체를 비교하여 번역자의 성별에 따른 어휘, 호칭 표현 등의 차이에 대해 집중 분석했다. 그리고이를 바탕으로 오랫동안 제기되어온 번역가의 성정체성과 번역 결과물 사이에는 분명 부정할 수 없는 상관관계가 있음을 확인하였다. 그런데 본 연구를 통해 가부장적이든 여성주의적이든 성정체성이 강하게표출된 번역은 다양한 문제를 야기할 수 있음을 알게 되었다. 우선 지나친 가부장적 번역은 자칫 독자들에게 셰익스피어의 성(性)에 관한 정치적 입장을 왜곡시킬 수 있고 또 너무 적극적인 여성주의 번역도 원전의 의도나 문맥의의미에서 벗어난 번역을 낳았다. 따라서 이 연구를 통해 내린 결론은 번역가는원전의 의도나 의미를 크게 훼손하지 않는 선에서 현대의 독자들에게 수용가능한 번역을 가능한 객관적 입장에서 시도해야 한다는 것이다.
Nowadays, translator's identity including gender becomes an important issue in translation. After the women's movement has problematized language, many academic criticism has tried to reveal the ideological aspects of canons translated by patriarchal male translators and to recover lost female translators. In this study, Korean versions of Shakespeare's Othello translated by three male translators and three female translators are compared,which was obviously reached to an conclusion that gender difference brings about the different translation. As far, language, a man-made artifact, was made to reflect only men's ideas. In general male translators sticked to the original meaning of such a patriarchal language and still conserve male bias and patriarchal authority in their translation. While, women translators have tried to get rid of oppressive aspects from the language and to provide modern readers with new concepts of gender. They have tried to find and use new expressions to get beyond the conventions of patriarchal language in Shakespeare's texts. However, what is a good translation becomes a little sophisticated problem when we think the ethics of translation. Translators who are too politicized may take offence at the source text. Translators should try to avoid severe intervention for their ideology and to be as neutral politically as they can even when they try a new translation for the new readers. Even though we cannot erase our gender identity completely in translation, we should pay attention not to pursue the conscious gender-biased translation. It has the danger to pervert the meaning or message of the source text to the target readers.
