이 논문은 오정희의 「유년의 뜰」과 「중국인 거리」, 그리고 「저녁의 게임」을 대상으로 그녀의 소설에서 ‘죽음’이 형상화되고 의미화되는 방식을 살펴보았다. 죽음에 대한 유의미한 인식을 보여주고 있다고 생각되는 이 작품들에 공통적으로 나타나는 여성인물의 세계인식, 특히 죽음에 대한 인식을 중점적으로 고찰하면서, 여전히 모호하고 불투명하게 남아 있는 텍스트의 다양한 의미들을 검토했다. 이러한 해석 작업은 오정희의 소설에 나타난 죽음의 의미를 유형화하고 아울러 유년과 여성의 성장, 그리고 죄의식 등이 갖는 의미들을 탐구하는데 유용한 토대가 될 것이다. 「유년의 뜰」에는 우리를 매혹시키는 ‘유년’이라는 상실한 대상 자체에 이미 어떤 상실이 내포되어 있다는 인식이 담겨 있다. 「유년의 뜰」의 논리에 따르면 삶의 유기적 충만함은 죽음이라는 장막이 드리워짐으로써만 가능하다. 「유년의 뜰」에서 노랑눈이가 상실하게 되는 것은 결핍되지 않은 원형적 직접성이라는 대상 그 자체이기보다는 상실 그 자체를 전제함으로써 가능하게 된 유기적,직접적 소유의 체험인 것이다. 반면 「중국인 거리」에서 초조로 상징되는 나의 육체적 성숙은 죽음을 향한 실질적 첫 걸음인 동시에 섹슈얼리티라는 환상의 완성을 향한 첫 걸음이라고 할 수 있다. 그것은 어머니의 삶을 향한 첫 걸음인 동시에 부네의 삶을 향한 첫 걸음인 것이다. 다시 말해서 그것은 죽음을 향한 첫걸음이자 죽음 뒤의 삶을 향한 첫걸음으로 해석될 수 있다. 마지막으로 「저녁의 게임」에서 어머니의 죽음을 둘러싸고 벌어지는 “더러운 게임”은 가족 구성원들에게 하나의 증상으로 작용한다. 여기에서 죄의식은 종속에 대한 진정한 자각을, 근원적인 죄의식으로부터 끌어내는 외설적인 과잉의 쾌락에 대한 자각을 방어하는 역할을 한다. 그녀는 현실적인 결핍과 죄의식을 통해 아버지를 배반하는 것처럼 보이지만, 그러한 행위 자체가 아버지에대한 또 다른 복종의 양식으로 기능하게 된다. 이 소설에서 공범끼리의 적의와 친밀감의 토대가 되는 죄의식은 언제든 준비되어 있는 배반감의 토대가 되는 죄의식을 통해 역설적으로 더욱 견고해지게 된다는 것이다.

This thesis’ purpose is to analyse the meaning of death in Oh Jung-hee’s fictions, especially on the diversity in the meaning of death revealed in A childhood’ garden, The Chinese Street, and A Night game. Oh Jung-hee is, without doubt, one of the most important writers and her idiosyncratic blend of life and death is always sparkling with insight. So the theme of death is very valuable for studying and exploring her world of novels. In A childhood’ garden, death means a way for bringing one’s life alive. Life come alive in the possibility of it’s own end. In The Chinese Street, death is not only the termination of life, but also the entrance of new stage that is filled with the fantasy that a man is watching me. I always come alive in spite of death so long as a man remember me. In The Night game, death is treated as a sign for a desire of the character. In conclusion, the theme of death is important keyword to understand her novel’s essence. Oh Jung-hee has been insisted on this problem since her debut. In my opinion, this problem and theme make her novel be read more deeply and widely.
