문학과 영화의 매체적인 차이를 감안하면 영화로 전환될 때 가장 까다로운 문학 텍스트는 인간 내면의 추상적인 정신 활동에 초점을 맞추고 있는 작품일 것이다. 시간에 따른 인물의 행동이나 자연 상태의 변화를 다루고 있는 서사가 아닌, 변화의 방향성이 모호하고 주로 1인칭 화자의 내면 독백적 서술을 통해 변화의 지점들을 제시하고 있는 문학 작품이야 말로 영화의 기호인 ‘표현적인외연’을 획득하기 가장 어려운 대상이기 때문이다. 본고는 1960년대 중반에 제작된 문예 영화 가운데 내면적 독백이 주를 이루는 손소희의 「그날의 햇빛은」 과 이를 영화화한 「초연」(정진우 감독, 1966)을 대상으로 고백체 소설이 영화로 전환되는 과정에서 일어나는 서사의 구조적 변화를 고찰해 보았다. 원작에서 1인칭 화자의 심리적 변화에 치중되어 있었던 내적 독백들이 영화에서는행위를 통해 재현되는 구체적인 사건 제시로 전환되었다. 이와 같은 변화는 추상적 의미 전달이 용이한 언어와 즉물적 제시를 통해 의미에 도달해야 하는 영상 사이의 본질적인 차이에 기인한다. 또한 소설에서 화자의 내면에서 일어나는 심리 변화에 따라 비계기적으로 연결되었던 서사 구성이 영화에서는 선조적 시간 구성을 따라 재배치되었다. 매체 전환 과정에서 일어난 서사 구조의 변화는 각 매체의 수용 방식과 밀접한 연관을 맺고 있다. 독자의 이해 여부에 따라 텍스트 활용이 상대적으로 자유로운 소설에 비해 집단적이고 일회적인 감상에 그칠 수밖에 없었던 영상 매체의 수용 환경이 이와 같은 시간 구성 변화의 주요한 원인이라고 볼 수 있다. 소설의 여성 화자가 대타자의 욕망에 자신을 종속시킴으로써 쾌락을 추구하는 히스테리적인 주체였던 반면 영화의 여성 주인공은 능동적인 욕망의 주체로서 구현되었다. 영화에서 여주인공은 시각적으로도 성적 매력이 강조되었지만 자신의 욕망에 좀 더 솔직하게 드러내는 인물로 그러진다. 이와 같은 변화는 극적 갈등을 더 적극적으로 유발시켜 대중적 관심을 끄는 데 효과적으로 기여하는 동시에 논란을 불러일으켰다. 하지만 소설 속의 여주인공이 정신병원이라는 ‘비정상성’의 범주에 갇히는 결말에 도달했던 것과 달리 영화 속의 여성 주인공은 자신의 욕망을 솔직하게 드러낸 것에 대해 서사적 처벌을 받지 않는다. 이와 같은 결말의 차이에는 소설에서 여성 주체를 다루는 방식에 대한 감독의 비판적 해석이 반영되어 있다고 볼 수 있다.

Considering differences between the literature and the film, a literary text which focused on human inner state is the most tricky one when translating it into a film. That kind of literary work does not deal with actual events which have time, place and act so it lacks 'expressivité' which is main tool for most films. Son Sohee's short story The Sunshine on That Day has lots of confession - diaries and letters - which describes a female main character of the story which Jung Jinwoo's Gunsmoke (Choyeon) is based on. There are lots of structural differences between them some are caused by difference of media and some are intentionally created by the director of the film. Most event described in confession changed into scenes with actual actions. These changes are due to the intrinsic difference of media. The short story written mainly inoder of free association of the narrator who are confined in a psychiatric hospital because of mental destruction. The film choose arrange all the events in oder of time so that most audiences can easily understand the whole story. Considering 1960's media circumstance, it was nearly impossible for anyone to watch films freely and repeatedly in order to apprehend excessively complicated story. The changes in structures of each text are closely associated with receptive capacity of each medium. The changes in substance occured on the psychological state of the female main character. The narrator in the fiction who willingly surrenders her desire to the Other is described as a hysterical subject. However, the female main character in the film is more open to her own desire and persue her ideal -ego through the love affairs with male characters. She is somewhat sexually iconized on the screen but in the end she survived while the narrator of the fiction confine and narratively punished for sexual freedom. The active role of main character in the film dragged more attention of the public (which the success of the film score demonstrates). She also was the problematic character who made the society think over what the meaning of "prostitute" and the desire of women.
