This report is to contemplate the ‘spatiality’ found in Ae-Ran Kim’s novel through spatial symbol and the spatial consciousness that occurs from space and the character’s awareness. This will be of vital importance in providing the author’s condition of world view, and identifying the literary theme. In modern society’s urbanized ‘home’, ‘family’ ceases to exist, and it degenerates into the concept of ‘property’ decided by the arrangement and effectiveness of the surrounding’s functional space. With ‘house’ losing its significance as a place, it is replaced by a personalized ‘room’. The narrative space of Ae-Ran Kim’s novel represents the division of modern society, and the identity of the reification of being. Serious problems of modern society like youth unemployment problem, weakened family ties, human alienation, the degeneration of human into an instrumental being, etc. are actualized through the character’s living space, life space, and experience space. The environment that betrays an individual’s will and emotion, and attitude towards life, reveals the individual’s limit and existence as a ‘being-in-the-world’The spatial consciousness formed in the narrative between the author and the reader acquires spatial concreteness, and develops social implication of space. The rising generation that appears in Ae-Ran Kim’s novel can be understood by interlinking it to post capitalism. Furthermore, the author critically contemplates the poor environment that the rising generation of today has to live in. Such critical understanding of reality materializes through the character’s life and living space. The common characteristics represented by these spaces are poor environment, momentariness, disposability, and being consumptive rather than being productive. In addition, it is not a space of interconnectedness, but a space of miscommunication and alienation.
