『토지』의 서사는 작가의 생명사상에 의한 능동적인 생명체의 구현에 지향점을 두고 있다. 국가나 민족이 서로서로 떨어져 기능하는 부분 집합들을 모으는 추상적 통일체이듯이 서사구조 역시 개인의 삶의 존재 양식을 통합하는 추상적 통일체이다. 서사구조에서 추상적 통일체는 주인공이 없거나, 미확정적인 이야기, 열린 서사구조로서 나타나지만, 『토지』에서는 욕망하는 생명체로서의 개인의 삶의 존재방식을 민족적인 것으로 소환하여 여기에 하나의 전체, 생명성을 통하여 민족을 내재화한다. 개인은 욕망하는 주체이면서 욕망의 대상이다. 첫 번째 서사구조에서 나타나는 특징은 주인공이 없는 서사구조이다. 주인공이 없다는 것은 각 개인이 자기 나름의 한을 쌓기도 하고 풀기도 하는 고유의 삶을 살아가고 있음을 보여주는 형식 구조이다. 두 번째 특징은 인물들의 존재방식을 서술하는 방식 또한 기존의 서사 방식을 많이 벗어나 있다. 서사의 긴박한 순간에 갑자기 이야기가 잘린 것처럼 다른 이야기로 넘어간다. 이것은 다양한 삶의 존재 방식과 마찬가지로 삶은 필연적인 운명보다는 우연에 의해서 조합되어 그것이 필연적인 운명을 이루고 있음을 보여주는 서사구조라고 할 수 있다. 세 번째는 주로 역사서술이나 독립운동을 서술한 부분에서 많이 나타나는 특징이다. 인물간의 유기적인 관계가 약한 생소한 인물들이 일정한 맥락이나 필연성 없이 나타나 의병운동이라든가, 형평사운동, 계명회 사건, 또 다양한 독립운동과 연계시키고 있다. 등장인물들을 끈질기게 독립운동에 참여시키기 위해 소환하는 것은 이는 한 개인 생명의 존엄성은 공동체를 통하여 지킬 수 있음을 드러내는 작가의식의 반영이다. 『토지』는 다양한 개인적 존재양식을 다루고 있기 때문에 주인공이 없다고 말할 수 있지만, 중심인물인 서희와 최참판가를 통하여 혹은 대리인 장연학을 통하여 민족공동체의 비젼을 제시한다. 모든 이웃을 혈연가족과 같은 사랑으로 이런 마음을 민족공동체까지 확대, 돌봄의 미학을 보여준다. 즉 『토지』의 다른 서사적 의도와 함께 작가는 서희를 통해서 무한포용의 모성적 세계, 전 우주적 해한상생(解恨相生)의 세계를 이루려는 서사적 의도를 보여준다. 이런 모성포용적 세계는 서사구조에서도 열린 구조와 다양한 인물 구도를 통해 드러난다. 작가는 역사를 만들어가는 능동적인 생명체와 같은 것으로 인식한다. 그래서 첫째 우리가 할일은 일본 제국주의 하에서 벗어나기 위해 적극적인 대응, 독립운동을 해야 한다는 것, 『토지』에서 동학운동에서 의병 활동, 민주에서의 갖가지의 독립운동이 제시되는 것은 능동적인 역사, 우리 것을 찾기 위한 노력의 일환, 민족사의 배경으로 서술되고 있다. 두 번째는 나라가 없기 때문에 다스리는 일은 돈 있고, 더 힘있는 자들이 일본제국주의의 침탈로 헐벗고 굶주린 백성들을 고루 족할 정도는 아니더라도 일제로부터 벗어날 때까지라도 버티고 살아남도록 도와야 함을 서희나 장연학을 통해 이루어낸다.

Toji(Land) shows open narrative structure which is derived from the author’s point of view towards life. As a nation or a national race is an abstract, unified identity, open narrative structure also unifies various individuals’ lives into a story. Even there is no main character in the novel, or no definite ending of story, Toji(Land) shows how an individual life exists among his or her people in the same country showing desire to survive and shows how those lives show details of nation as a whole. There are some important features in the narrative structure of Toji. First, there is no main character in the story which means that there are each individuals who have their own, different lives, each by each. Second, the way to tell story about characters is somewhat different from the existing style. Stories jump on new stories when they were in the middle of urgent moments. This makes us understand how there are many different life styles and how they meet each other through coincidence. Third, the way to tell story about history and independence movement is also notable, since the historical events are absent from the story but shown how those individual took those historical incidents into their lives and changed by their circumstances. Even though Toji(Land) can be told that there is no main character to show various individuals’ lives, there are Seo Hi and the Choi family, or Jang who showed the vision of Korean nation. By taking care of all neighbors, Toji showed how to love our own nation through Seo Hi’s life and her maternal world. The author recognizes history as an active, living organism. That is why it is shown in her story that our Korean people should fight against Japanese imperialism, to achieve our own independence as a nation, to recover our nation’s history.
