이 글은 종교와 이주 공동체의 강한 상관관계를 보이는 안산의 가톨릭 필리핀 이주 공동체를 중심으로, 이들이 자신들의 종교를 주체적으로 수입하고 변형함으로써 이주지에서의 정서적 안정, 연대의 규범, 정체성과 공동체정신을 형성해왔다는 문제의식 속에서 이주 공동체 형성과 종교의 관계를 탐색한다. 따라서 이 연구는 마태오, 오카무라와 같은 필리핀 디아스포라와 관련된 선행연구자들로부터 영감을 얻어, 한국의 필리핀 이주자들의 경험과 사례를 질적인 측면에서 분석한다. 필리핀 이주자들이 이주지에서 공동체를 형성하는 데 있어서, 종교(교회)는 중요한 물적 외적 자원의 공급처일 뿐 아니라 공동체 구성의 제도적 준거모델이 되었다. 특히 이 연구가 보다 심층적으로 주목하고 탐구한 사실은 종교적 신앙과 의례, 종교적 상징이 이주지에서 수용과 변형의 과정을 거치며, 이는 이주자들의 정서적 안정뿐만 아니라 연대와 돌봄의 규범, 정체성과 공동체정신을 가능하게 하는 매개요인이 된다는 데 있다. 결국 종교적 경험과 의례는 필리핀인들의 집단적 문화로서 재탄생하며, 이는 이주를 규범으로 하는 필리핀인들의 이주 전략으로 전유된다는 사실을 이 글에서는 밝히고 있다.
The religion is an important factor on making and sustaining a migrant community. This paper demonstrates that the religion as non material tradition and the social form of the church organization greatly influenced the formalization of the Filipino migrant community. In that sense, I discover the relations between Filipino migrants in Korea and Catholicism which is certainly mains street in the Filipino’s culture. This paper is not much payed attention to how religious activities and institutional supports from the religion as a social capital affect the building of the community but focuses on features of religious faith and ritual as a collective trend and culture. Thus I argue that the faith, ritual, and symbols of filipino migrants would have been contributing to making individual relief mechanism as well as collective mind, identity, and solidarity. I analyze Filipino’s experiences and cases in light of Mateo, and Okamura whose researches are oriented towards Filipino Diaspora in the States and Japan A faithful devotion and ritual tradition remain as important foundations for identity and solidarity among the Filipino migrant community members. As one of the principles of community is making religion actively practiced and reinterpreted within the Filipino migrant community for their collective identity and consciousness. Therefore, the faith and ritual of religion play a vital role as a essential device for Filipino migrant community in terms of strategics of migration.
