이 글에서 저자는 국내 독립운동사학계에서 상용되는 토종 용어인 ‘의열투쟁’의 개념을 명확히 재정립하고 그것의 통전적 특성과 역사적 의미를 종합적으로 재구성하여 제시하기를 시도한다. 근래 들어 이 용어법을 둘러싸고 생겨난 인식론적 혼돈과 정치적 쟁론들을 염두에 두고서이다. 그동안 역사학계에서 취해온 내재적 접근만으로는 부족함이 있다는 판단에서 저자는 개념사적 검토와 비교론적 고찰을 수반하는 외향적 접근을 도입한다. 그랬을 때의 핵심적 문제는 의열투쟁과 테러 및 테러리즘과의 상관성 여부와 그 정도, 즉 3자는 통념적인 이해에서처럼 결국 같은 것인가라는 질문이다. 이 문제의 해명을 위해 먼저 독립운동사 연구에서의 의열투쟁 용어법의 기원과 정착 과정, 그 개념 구성과 의미 형성 및 확장의 추이를 살펴보고, 그것의 의미론적 특성을 여러 각도에서 정리, 제시한다. 연후에 저자는 의열투쟁과 테러 및 테러리즘과의 의미연관 문제를 검토하는데, 우선은 2001년 ‘9·11 테러’ 이후로 이 문제를 둘러싸고 국내에서 조성된 학계 안팎의 담론상황을 개관하고, 테러(리즘)에 대한 역사적 의미론의 추이를 살피면서 그 속에서 수차의 변전이 있었음을 밝혀낸다. 다음으로 저자는 테러리즘의 사회과학적 개념을 다수의 문헌 분석으로부터 추출하여 제시하고, 그것에 근거하여 의열투쟁은 테러리즘과 같지 않음을 논증한다. 마지막으로, 앞의 논의들을 종합하는 선에서 의열투쟁의 새로운 이해를 위한 소견을 그 역사적 위치와 의미를 중심으로 개진한다. 결미에서 의열투쟁은 폭력이 아니라 ‘반폭력’의 차원에 속하는 것임도 주장된다.
The author in this paper attempts to clarify the concept of an indigenous Korean term “Eui-yeol-tujaeng”(의열투쟁), and to reconstruct synthetically its historical meanings, bearing in mind the cognitive dissonance and political denunciation caused recently about the terminology. In this connection, whether there would be nexus relations between Eui-yeol-tujaeng and terrorism, and how much if any, are posed as a core problem. In order to elucidate this problem, the author starts by inquiring into a series of developmental process, ranging from origination and settlement of the term to its meaning formation and expansion, and goes to pointing out its semantic characteristics from divergent angles. Nextly, he surveys the domestic discourse situation after the 9·11 Incident of 2001 which has been tangled with confusions and quarrels about terror problem. Furthermore, he indicates and explicates that there have been significant shifts in historical semantics of terror and terrorism since the 18th century. And then finally, he presents a social scientific concept of terrorism extracted from review and analysis of related texts. Through these works, the author reaches to a conclusion that Eui-yeol-tujaeng is certainly a different concept from terrorism, though bearing somewhat terror type of actions. Moreover, he suggests a new understanding of Eui-yeol-tujaeng with an assertion that it should belong not to violence but to anti-violence.
