The purpose of the current study is to investigate differences, if any, in interpretation of English texts in accordance with college students’ English writing proficiency. To fulfill the purpose of the study, 128 college students participated, and they were divided into two groups (high and low) depending upon their English writing proficiency. The participants were first asked to answer the 12 questions after evaluating the two texts, and then to carry out a half-page free writing with the topic of “My Favorite.” The results revealed that by and large the students perceived the Chinese ESL student’s text as easier to read in its clear purpose, clarity, and persuasiveness, and that high-level English writers appreciated the native speaker’s text better probably because they were accustomed/acculturated more to western writing conventions than their counterparts. The stark contrast in pragmatic interpretation of L2 writing conventions are discussed.
